Abstract: One method includes stochastically selecting, by a central node, a subset of edge nodes from a group of edge nodes that collectively defines a federation, querying, by the central node, the edge nodes of the subset for updates to a global model maintained by the central node, receiving, by the central node from the edge nodes of the subset, respective updates to one or more layers of the global model, and updating, by the central node, the global model, using the updates received from the edge nodes of the subset.

Abstract: One example method includes receiving a request for communication between a client node and a server node of a federated learning system. The request is made according to a protocol related to updating a global model by the federated learning system. The protocol defines a first transmission step that should be made during the update of the global model. The request for communication between the client node and the server node is analyzed based in part on credential information and communication information related to the client node and the server node. A secure communication channel is established between the client node and the server node when it is determined that the client node and the server node are to be given access to communicate with each other.
