Abstract: A method and an apparatus for document formatting, capable of reflecting the preference of the operator and overall balance, such that the desired formatting can be obtained efficiently without tedious post-processing operations. In the apparatus, document data representing the document, including figure data representing figure elements of the document, and region data indicating layout regions to which the document is to be laid out, are inputted, candidate layouts for each figure element to be laid out are generated, one of the generated candidate layouts is selected, and the document is formatted in the layout region, according to the selected one of the candidate layouts.

Abstract: The present invention relates to a sewage disposal apparatus employing large buoyant filter media and is directed to prevent effectively clogging in these filter media. The intended object of the invention can be attained by circulating the filter media by a circulation arrangement to allow the filter bed as a whole to flow very calmly, and more efficiently by removing sludge deposited on the filter media utilizing the circulatory movement of the filter media.

Abstract: A machine translation system includes a translation processor, a display, and a display controller. The display has original and translated sentence display sections. The display controller has a display managing section and a display format controller. The translation processor translates a given original sentence by accessing a dictionary. The translated and original sentences are displayed in the translated and original sentence display sections, i.e., right and left display sections of the display. The original and translated sentences are managed by the display magaging section in predetermined units of translation processing. The display format controller controls the original and translated sentences such that start lines of a given group thereof are horizontally aligned with each other.

Abstract: The present invention relates to a sewage disposal method employing a filter media and an apparatus for carrying out the same intended for the effective prevention of the clogging of the filter media. Sewage currents are generated in a circulation passage means defined in a septic tank by a sewage current generating means to circulate the filter media regularly and continuously through the circulation passage means by the sewage currents. Sludge can be removed from the filter media by regularly circulating the filter media without dispersing the sludge in the septic tank.

Abstract: An apparatus and method for editing a document to automatically produce a satisfactory, well ordered layout which includes the steps of (a) extracting characteristic quantities which characterize different elements of the document; (b) deriving relationships among the different elements of the document in accordance with the characteristic quantities; (c) determining a layout of the different elements of the document in accordance with the relationships; and (d) processing the document in accordance with the layout.

Abstract: A language expression data base is adapted to store expression data of an input sentence of a first language to be translated into a second language and the expression data stored in the language expression data base is renewed under the control of an expression data input unit. An input basic form sentence structure data extracted from the input sentence of the first language is translated into a basic form sentence structure data of the second language at the sentence structure transfer unit. A basic form sentence of the second language is obtained on the basis of the basic form sentence structure data of which an expression is then modified according to the expression data stored in the language expression data base, and a modified sentence of the second language is displayed on a display through an output unit.

Abstract: A document processing system includes an input section, a memory section, a text analyzing section, an image identifying section, an image size identifying section, a layout processing section, and an output section. Document data is constituted by text data and image data. The test data includes key information corresponding to the image data, and the image data is laid out in the document data. The text data and image data input through the input section are stored in the memory section. The text analyzing section identifies a position in the document data at which the image data is to be laid out, based on a position of key information in the text data. The image identifying section identifies image data corresponding to the key information. The image size identifying section identifies an image size of the image data identified by the image identifying section.

Abstract: A method and an apparatus for generating patterns of images, sounds, documents, or graphics by processing data indicating the patterns to be generated, which can produce patterns in accordance with the personal preference and inclination of a user and which can be operated in a simple manner. The method includes the steps of processing input data, extracting feature data indicating physical features of the pattern, allowing a user to enter subjective evaluation values indicating the user's evaluation for characterizing quantities defined in terms of the physical features, deriving objective evaluation values indicating the apparatus' evaluation for the characterizing quantities with respect to prescribed reference values, determining pattern evaluation values in accordance with the subjective evaluation values and the objective evaluation values, adjusting the manner of processing in accordance with the pattern evaluation values, and re-processing the input data in the adjusted manner.

Abstract: A method for formatting document in which document data and format data are given independently and in which these data can be managed very efficiently. The method includes the steps of (a) entering document data representing a document to be formatted having a title; (b) identifying a subject field to which the document belongs by searching a key work characterizing the subject field; and (c) formatting the document in one of plurality of different types of format prescribed in accordance with the identified subject field. An apparatus for performing this method is also disclosed.

Abstract: A document processing system for laying out text data and image data referred to in the text data, thereby forming a document data. The system comprises a format-data storage section, a reference-data storage section, and a layout section. The format-data storage section stores format data including region-attribute data specifying an image-layout inhibited region in which to lay out no image data. The reference-data storage section stores reference data representing the relationship between the image data and an image-referring part of the text data in which the image data is referred to. The layout section lays out the text data in accordance with the region-attribute data and the reference data, and lays out the image data outside the image-layout inhibited region specified by the region-attribute data, in accordance with the reference data, thereby to form document data.

Abstract: A document processing apparatus has a heading word dictionary, a heading extractor, a heading rule dictionary, a heading decision section, a document architecture rule dictionary and, a document architecture decision section, for deciding a logical document architecture. The apparatus further comprises a rule application decision section and a candidate selection indication section to allow the operator to select any desired document architecture, when the document architecture decision section decides plural document architecture candidates exist in accordance with document architecture rules, thus improving the operability of the system. Further, the past rule application record information (priority order) is stored and updated so as to provide a learning function for providing better operability.

Abstract: A document generating system which includes an input device for inputting document data, a heading candidate extraction section for extracting, as a heading candidate, the word corresponding to the heading stored in a heading dictionary from the document data input at the input section. A heading decision section is implemented in the system for checking the heading candiate, that was extracted by the heading candidate extraction section according to a heading rule stored in a heading rule dictionary and for deciding whether the heading candidate is a heading. Also, a document architecture decision section is implemented in the system for checking the heading decided by the heading decision section according to document architecture rules stored in a document architecture rule dictionary. The architecture decision section is for determining the heading as satisfying the document architecture rule as a true heading, and the heading not satisfying the document architecture rule as being false heading.

Abstract: A data processing apparatus permitting editing of document blocks associated with voice block data, wherein various document blocks, stored in a memory section, are read out and displayed on a display. A desired document block is designated by a cursor, and the corresponding voice data is input, thereby associating the desired document block with the corresponding voice block data which is stored in another memory section. Input sentences are divided into document blocks, to be edited and displayed. Even if the document block displayed is moved during editing, the voice data corresponding to the moved document block can be output, by operating a voice output key.
