    Abstract: A wheel bearing apparatus has an outer member, an inner member, double row rolling elements, and seals. At least one seal has a slinger and an annular sealing plate. The sealing plate has a metal core, press fit into the outer member, and a sealing member, integrally vulcanized adhered to the metal core. The sealing member has first and second side lips, formed with an inclination extending radially outward, and a cylindrical inner end portion, surrounding the inner circumferential edge and a portion of the back surface of the metal core. Each tip of the first and second side lips is in sliding contact with the slinger, with a predetermined interference. The cylindrical inner end portion is arranged opposite to the slinger with a slight radial gap therebetween to form a labyrinth seal.

A wheel pilot portion extends from the brake pilot portion further toward the outer side to guide an inner circumferential surface of the wheel. The wheel pilot portion including a plurality of separated pilots separated along a circumferential direction. A chamfered portion is formed, by forging, on a forward end of each separated pilot in view of its lathe cutting direction. The chamfered portion has a predetermined inclined angle relative to an axial end surface of each separated pilot after lathe cutting.

The joint outer ring has a base material portion composed of a standard structure and an outer surface layer partially formed as a non-standard structure portion. The non-standard structure may be a tempered martensite structure, or a mixed structure including the tempered martensite structure and at least one of an upper bainite structure and a lower bainite structure.

    Abstract: A driving wheel bearing apparatus has an inner ring 5 secured to a wheel hub 1 by a caulked portion 13. An outer joint member 14 of a constant velocity universal joint 3 has a shoulder portion 19 and a cylindrical shaft portion. Face splines 19a and 13a are formed at the end faces of the shoulder portion 19 and the caulked portion 13. Face splines 19a and 13a are supported with pressure by a fastening bolt 21 that abuts the outer side end face of the wheel hub 1 and is threadedly connected to an internal thread 20a of the shaft portion 20. Compressive remaining stress is placed on the surfaces of the face splines 19a and 13a as a result of surface modification, by shot peening. The surface hardness is set at 300 Hv or more.

The inner ring is axially secured relative to the wheel hub by a caulked portion. The caulked portion is formed by plastically deforming, radially outwardly, the end portion of the cylindrical portion. The caulked portion has a flat surface formed by a cutting process that is adapted to surface contact the shoulder. The radially outermost end of the flat surface is arranged so that it does not abut against the shoulder.

The rings are press fit onto the cylindrical portion of the wheel hub, via a predetermined interference. One ring abuts the shoulder portion. Double row rolling elements are freely rollably contained between the opposed inner and outer raceway surfaces, via cages. The inner rings are axially immovably secured by a caulked portion. The caulked portion is formed by plastically radially outwardly deforming the end portion of the cylindrical portion.

A predetermined hardened layer is formed by high frequency induction hardening over a range from the base of the wheel mounting flange to the cylindrical portion. A position of the inner side end of the hardened layer is set within a range from an edge of a chamfered portion at the caulked side of the inner ring to a position corresponding to a root of the larger flange portion.
