  • Publication number: 20240132207
Abstract: This disclosure is directed to hybrid tilt propeller/tilt wing aircraft. The aircraft includes a fuselage, a first wing, and a second wing. The first wing and the second wing each include a fixed inner portion and an outer portion rotatably coupled to the inner portion. The aircraft includes a first propeller and a second propeller respectively associated with the first wing and the second wing and that can respectively rotate together with the outer portion of the associated wing. The aircraft includes an third wing and a third propeller mounted to the third wing. The third wing and the third propeller can rotate with respect to the fuselage. The aircraft can control movement in all directions without cyclic control of the first propeller, the second propeller, and the third propeller.

  • Publication number: 20160152324
Abstract: A system, apparatus, device, and method for controlling fluid flow, including one or more devices generating one or more secondary fluid flow structures, wherein the fluid flow structures emanate from the aerodynamic or hydrodynamic surface, have a strength that is controlled independently of the primary flow, and enhance the aerodynamic or hydrodynamic force generated by primary flow predominantly by changing direction of said primary flow whether the flow is attached or separated from the surface, and/or interrupting and re-starting said primary flow forming regions that are not directly affected by the fluid flow structure regardless of whether said primary flow is attached or separated.

  • Patent number: 6751530
Abstract: A vehicle capable of flight including at least one wing including at least one oscillatory momentum generator mounted therein. A thrust force from the oscillatory momentum generator is directed outwards over the wing causing a lift-generating air flow over a wing surface. A method of flying a vehicle including providing at least one wing having at least one oscillatory momentum generator mounted therein and applying a thrust force from the generator which is directed outwards over the wing and directed to the trailing edge so that a lift generating air flow is created.

  • Publication number: 20030229428
Abstract: An aerial vehicle controlled and propelled by oscillatory momentum generators and method of flying a vehicle. A vehicle capable of flight is disclosed. The vehicle includes at least one wing including at least one oscillatory momentum generator mounted therein. A thrust force from the oscillatory momentum generator is directed outwards over the wing causing a lift-generating air flow over a surface of the at least one wing. Further disclosed is a method of flying a vehicle including providing at least one wing having at least one oscillatory momentum generator mounted therein and applying a thrust force from generator which is directed outwards over the wing so that a lift generating air flow is created.

  • Patent number: 6267331
Abstract: A method for inhibiting dynamic stall of an airfoil by causing a fluid to flow out of at least one location on the airfoil. This location may be anywhere on the airfoil; but if the location is within one-quarter of the airfoil chord from the leading edge and the fluid flow has non-zero net mass flux, then the fluid flow is modulated at a frequency described by a Strouhal ratio greater than one.

  • Patent number: 6250586
Abstract: This invention discloses a fluid dynamic system including a fluid medium separated from a solid medium by a solid boundary, one of which media is moving with respect to the other, apparatus for controlling the motion of the moving medium, comprising, a perturbation-producing element at solid boundary, and a drive for cyclically driving the perturbation-producing element to produce cyclical fluid perturbations in the fluid medium sufficient to alter the motion of the moving medium. A method for including a fluid medium separated from a solid medium by a solid boundary in a fluid dynamic system is also disclosed.

  • Patent number: 6247670
Abstract: An active flaperon assembly for a wing includes a sheet of flexible material deployed near an intersection between a primary lift surface of a wing and the surface of a flap. The sheet is mechanically linked to the flap such that it is withdrawn from and extended into the air flow over the wing, the extent of projection varying as a function of the downward deflection of the flap. An actuator generates mechanical oscillations in the sheet.

  • Patent number: 5209438
Abstract: An active perturbation-producing element on the solid surface is driven to induce oscillations in the boundary layer of the fluid stream about an axis substantially perpendicular to the solid surface, to enhance the mixing of the boundary layer in the fluid stream. The method is particularly applicable for increasing the lift of a wing, but may also be used for increasing the divergence angle of a diffuser.

  • Patent number: 4257224
Abstract: A method and apparatus are described for controlling the mixing of two fluids in which an active element is driven to induce, in the vicinity of the beginning of the mixing region, oscillations of the two fluids about an axis substantially normal to the mixing region flow axis. The active element may be driven by an external drive, or by the kinetic energy in the fluids. Several applications of the invention are described including promoting combustion in jet engines, suppressing audible jet noise, and increasing the output of ejector pumps or thrust augmentors.
