  • Patent number: 8712070
Abstract: A method and apparatus for providing simultaneous enhancement of transmission loss and absorption coefficient using activated cavities is presented. A layer of material is provided, and a backing plate having a plurality of cavities on the top surface of said backing plate, is disposed adjacent a top surface of said layer of material. A screen is disposed along the top surface of said cavities on said backing plate and at least one cavity includes an actuator disposed within the cavity and a control system receiving a signal from the microphone and receiving a signal from the accelerometer and providing a drive signal to the actuator to provide an acoustic output to provide simultaneous insertion loss and absorption which serves to minimize a linear combination of the signal from the microphone and the signal from the accelerometer.

  • Patent number: 7248703
Abstract: A system (400) for reducing non-acoustic noise includes a primary sensor (420), at least one secondary sensor (410), a filter (415), and a summation unit (425). The primary sensor (420) measures pressure and produces a primary pressure signal. The at least one secondary sensor (410) measures pressure and produce a secondary pressure signal. The filter (415) processes the secondary pressure signal to produce a filtered pressure signal. The summation unit (425) subtracts the filtered pressure signal from the primary pressure signal to reduce non-acoustic noise in the primary pressure signal.

  • Patent number: 6160892
Abstract: In the active muffler disclosed herein, a porous flow resistive member defines a wall of a duct carrying a noisy flow, e.g., a jet exhaust. The flow resistive member is characterized by having a flow resistance substantially less than .rho.c, the characteristic impedance of the acoustic medium. Loudspeakers in a chamber on the side of said porous member opposite the duct are actuated to reduce acoustic pressure in the region between the porous member and the loudspeaker, thereby increasing the acoustic flow through the porous member which in turn increases the dissipation of acoustic energy in the duct. The apparatus is particularly effective at low frequencies where a passive dissipative muffler would be of impractical size.
