    Abstract: An additive for use in metal-refining, particularly desulfurization of pig iron, inoculation for spheroidal graphite cast-iron and dephosphorization of various metals, is prepared by a process wherein a composition comprised of (a) magnesium carbonate and/or magnesium oxide and (b) calcium carbonate and/or calcium oxide is maintained at a temperature of from 1,600.degree. to 4,000.degree. C. in the presence of a carbonaceous material in a non-oxidizing atmosphere, and then, the reaction product in the form of dust is suddenly cooled.
