  • Patent number: 4512155
Abstract: An apparatus and method for stimulating a flow from a geothermal well. A primary or stimulating fluid flows into the space between the inner and outer casings of the well. The primary fluid enters the inner casing through a series of valves at various elevations along the geothermal well casings. In one of the preferred embodiments the valves are responsive to the velocity of the primary fluid at the face of the valve to control the rate of fluid flow into the inner casing .

  • Patent number: 4364232
Abstract: The flow performance of the geothermal wells represents the ability of the wells to produce useful heat. A liquid-dominated geothermal well can be made to flow by introducing a primary fluid at a selected level in the well. In the process disclosed herein, a primary fluid is introduced into the well casing through a plurality of valves at preselected elevations to accomplish the startup of the flow from the well, the continuous or intermittent, uninterrupted production of brine, and a regulated shutdown. In normal flowing operation, upon injection of the primary fluid through the valves into the well casing, the primary fluid vapor, together with geothermal steam will lift the brine from the depths of the well to the surface of the earth, where the geothermal heat stored in the brine and in the vapors that are co-produced with the brine can be further utilized. The process disclosed herein also minimizes the formation of scale in the well casing.

  • Patent number: 4149385
Abstract: The flow from geothermal wells is stimulated by injecting a liquid at selected levels in the well with the liquid having a boiling point below the temperature of the geothermal fluid at the levels of injection at the operating pressure at the levels of injection. The geothermal fluid and vaporized injected fluid from the well are applied to a system for extracting the heat energy as well as for cleaning sand and other well depositions that may accumulate in the geothermal well. The system may include a direct contact heat exchanger having either a vertical chamber or a horizontal chamber. The contactor has a plurality of zones including a boiler zone, one or more separation zones, and at least one heat exchange zone. The contactor may also include a wash zone and a flash zone.In the wash zone there is advantageously included recirculation trays vertically spaced for washing the vapor to remove entrained substances, such as minerals dissolved in the fluid from the geothermal wells.

  • Patent number: 4120158
Abstract: A process for the conversion of geothermal heat energy into electrical power by advantageously combining direct and indirect heat exchange systems and other systems to maximize the power production is presented herein. More specifically, a process and system is presented for the utilization of geothermal heat from flashed geothermal hot fluids composed of hot liquid and vapor. The heat from the hot liquid is advantageously exchanged with a working fluid in a direct contact heat exchanger, while the hot geothermal vapor is used in a boiler for heating, boiling and vaporizing the working fluid. The vaporized working fluid thus formed is fed into a power extraction device which may advantageously form a liquid mist upon expansion. The working fluid vapor is then condensed at the exhaust side of the power extraction device, and returned to the direct contact heat exchanger, thus closing the power cycle.

  • Patent number: 3988895
Abstract: Hot fluid which may contain salts and other dissolved minerals is passed through a direct contact heat exchanger in heat exchange relationship with a working fluid that has a specific gravity sufficiently below the specific gravity of the fluid so that it may pass from the bottom to the top of the heat exchanger chamber in contact with the fluid. The pressure of the chamber is selected to provide a certain mixture of working fluid and hot fluid at the output of the power extracting device of the system. The working fluid is selected so that the salts and other minerals in the fluid are relatively insoluble therein. The working fluid is vaporized in the exchanger and the vaporized working fluid and any steam mixed therewith are passed through a power extracting gas expansion device. The working fluid is separately condensed and recirculated.
