Abstract: The invention relates to azetidin-2-ones of the formula ##STR1## wherein R.sub.a represents hydroxy-lower alkyl, R.sub.1 represents hydrogen, an organic radical bonded by a carbon atom to the ring carbon atom or an etherified mercapto group, R.sub.2.sup.A together with the carbonyl group to which it is attached is a protected carboxyl group and Z' is oxygen, sulfhur or an optionally substituted methylidene group, functional groups in the radicals R.sub.a, R.sub.1 and Z' optionally being in protected form. The azetidinones are useful intermediates for the preparation of penem antibiotics.

Abstract: Novel asymmetric thioethers of the formula ##STR1## in which R.sup.1 represents a C.sub.1-3 -alkyl radical or a C.sub.1-3 -hydroxyalkyl radical of which the hydroxy group may be in esterified form,R.sup.2 represents an optionally unsaturated aliphatic radical having from 5 to 15 carbon atoms,R.sup.3 represents hydroxy, alkoxy or an optionally substituted amino group, and-X- represents a single bond, a methylene group or an optionally N-acylated primary aminomethylene groupwherein the O-atom of the hydroxy group is in the transconfiguration relative to the S-atom, are effective as leucotriene-antagonists since they eliminate the contractions of smooth muscles caused by leucotrienes and are therefore suitable for the treatment of allergic, especially asthmatic, conditions.

Abstract: The present invention relates to an improved process for the manufacture of (3S)-3,4-trans-disubstituted azetidinones of the formula ##STR1## in which R.sub.1 represents hydrogen or lower alkyl,R.sub.2 represents hydrogen or a hydroxy-protecting group,Y represents the group --S(.dbd.O)--R.sub.3 or --S(.dbd.O).sub.2 --R.sub.3 wherein R.sub.3 represents an organic radical bonded to the sulphur atom by a carbon atom that is not bonded to hydrogen, or the group --C(.dbd.O)--O--R.sub.3 ' wherein R.sub.3 ' represents an organic radical bonded to the oxygen atom of the carboxy group by a carbon atom that is not bonded to hydrogen, or a carboxy-protecting group, andR.sub.4 represents hydrogen or an amino-protecting group R.sub.4 '.The process according to the invention is carried out under particularly favorable reaction conditions and yields compounds (I) in particularly high yields.
