Publication number: 20240061252Abstract: To accommodate variations in the interpupillary distances associated with different users, a head-mounted device may have left-eye and right-eye optical modules that move with respect to each other. Each optical module may have a display that creates an image and a corresponding lens that provides the image to an associated eye box for viewing by a user. The optical modules each include a lens barrel to which the display and lens of that optical module are mounted and a head-mounted optical module illumination system. The illumination system may have light-emitting devices such as light-emitting diodes that extend along some or all of a peripheral edge of the display. The light-emitting diodes may be mounted on a flexible printed circuit with a tail that extends a lens barrel opening. A stiffener for the flexible printed circuit may have openings that receive the light-emitting diodes.Type: ApplicationFiled: October 17, 2023Publication date: February 22, 2024Inventors: Marinus Meursing, Keenan Molner, Chengyi Yang, Florian R. Fournier, Ivan S. Maric, Jason C. Sauers

Publication number: 20240045101Abstract: An electronic device may include components that emit and detect infrared light. For example, a head-mounted device may have optical modules that present images to a user's left and right eyes. Each optical module may have an infrared light-emitting diode that emits infrared light that illuminates an eye box at an infrared wavelength, and an infrared camera that captures an image from the eye box at the infrared wavelength. A low-reflectance coating may be applied to one or more electronic device housing walls to prevent interference with the infrared components or with the visibility for a user. In particular, the low-reflectance coating may be a low-visible-reflectance-and-low-infrared-reflectance coating that exhibits low-reflectance across both visible and infrared wavelengths. The low-reflectance coating may be formed from carbon nanotubes and at least one organic solvent with zero polarity to ensure a low volatile organic component in the coating.Type: ApplicationFiled: May 17, 2022Publication date: February 8, 2024Inventors: Peter J Guest, Ivan S Maric, Cole Snider, Ming Kun Shi, David Carnahan, Thomas T Morgan

Patent number: 11822145Abstract: An electronic device such as a head mounted device may have a display that displays an image for a user. Head-mounted support structures may be used to support the display and to support lenses. The head-mounted support structures may have one or more lens barrels or other support members. Each lens may have an optical surface and a side surface. Adhesive may be used to attach the lenses to the head-mounted support structures. A first portion of the adhesive may bond each lens to a first respective portion of a support member and a second portion of the adhesive may bond each lens to a second respective portion of the support member. The adhesive may be a non-silicone adhesive that fractures in bulk rather than failing at interfaces with the lens and support member. The elastic modulus of the adhesive may help avoid cracking and plastic deformation during drop events.Type: GrantFiled: July 20, 2020Date of Patent: November 21, 2023Assignee: Apple Inc.Inventors: Ivan S. Publication number: 20230363123Abstract: A head-mounted device can effectively manage heat while also managing noise output in a manner that reduces the user's perception thereof. For example, a support member extending across a flow channel can provide multiple sections with different profiles and/or cross-sectional dimensions within the flow channel. Each of the profiles and/or cross-sectional dimensions can generate tonal noises at different frequencies, so that the tonal noises generated are distributed across multiple frequencies to mask such tonal noises among broadband noises that are generated by the head-mounted device. Such a support member can be moveably positioned within the flow channel and rigidly coupled to other components of the head-mounted device. Such a support member can also be used to draw heat away from other components of the head-mounted device to be dissipated by the flow of air within the flow channel.Type: ApplicationFiled: July 21, 2023Publication date: November 9, 2023Inventors: Ivan S. MARIC, Aidan N. ZIMMERMAN, Phil M. HOBSON, Jonathan C. ATLER, Arash NAGHIB LAHOUTI, Jesse T. DYBENKO

Publication number: 20230350503Abstract: An external device, such as a head-mountable device, can be operated with a ring input device worn on a finger of a user. Such devices can be operated to provide inputs that are received and acted upon by the external device. The inputs can be provided as rotating, tilting, and/or sliding at least a portion of the ring input device with another finger of the user. The ring input device can provide feedback to the user as confirmation that the inputs are being received. A feedback system can also be operated to limit or otherwise provide a force on the finger and/or another portion of the hand to simulate sensations perceived by the user.Type: ApplicationFiled: June 26, 2023Publication date: November 2, 2023Inventors: Gabriele D′AMONE, Muhammad F. HOSSAIN, Ivan S. MARIC, Aidan N. ZIMMERMAN, Stephen E. DEY

Publication number: 20230296893Abstract: A head-mounted device may be provided with displays. The displays and lenses through which images on the displays are viewed may be mounted in optical modules. Positioners may be used to move the optical modules towards and away from each other to adjust the head-mounted device to accommodate different user interpupillary distances. To support and guide the optical modules, the optical modules may be slidably mounted to guide rails. The guide rails may be biased against the optical modules using biasing systems. By using the biasing systems, misalignment between the optical modules can be reduced. If desired, guide rail sensors may be used to monitor the positions of the guide rails. In some configurations, the optical modules may be mounted to the guide rails using kinematic mounting.Type: ApplicationFiled: January 18, 2023Publication date: September 21, 2023Inventors: Ivan S. Maric, Aidan N. Zimmerman, Jason C. Sauers, Jia Tao, John S. Camp, Phil M. Hobson, Jacob L. Smith, Evan D. Christensen

Patent number: 11762422Abstract: An electronic device may have a housing that separates an exterior region from an interior region. The housing may have a front layer on a front face of the housing and a rear layer on an opposing rear face of the housing. Sidewall structures may extend between the front and rear layers. The housing may form a head-mounted housing that is configured to be worn on a user's head. An internal frame may be mounted in the interior region. The internal frame may have a nose bridge structure that is coupled to the housing with a coupling member such as a coupling member formed from an elastomeric vibration damping material. Other portions of the frame such elongated laterally extending support members may not contact any portion of the housing and may therefore be isolated from the housing during drop events.Type: GrantFiled: May 17, 2021Date of Patent: September 19, 2023Assignee: Apple Inc.Inventors: Aidan N. Zimmerman, Evan D. Christensen, Ivan S. Maric, Jason C. Sauers, John S. Camp
