    Abstract: A process for preparation of 4-mercapto-1-naphthol compounds which comprises the steps of:(i) obtaining a 4-heterocyclylthio-1-naphthol compound by reacting a 1-naphthol compound with a heterocyclylsulfur chloride or by reacting a 4-iodo-1-naphthol compound with an alkali metal or ammonium salt of a mercaptoheterocyclic compound,(ii) hydrolyzing the resulting 4-heterocyclylthio-1-naphthol compound in the presence of a base to form a reaction product, and(iii) acidifying said reaction product.The resulting compounds are useful as intermediates in the synthesis of bleach accelerator releasing couplers for use in silver halide color photographic materials.

    Abstract: An infrared sensitive silver halide photographic element is disclosed comprising a support and at least one silver halide emulsion layer spectrally sensitized to the infrared portion of the electromagnetic spectrum. In particular, an infrared sensitive color photographic element, capable of providing full color images without exposure to corresponding visible radiation, is disclosed, said element comprising at least three silver halide emulsion layers on a substrate, each associated with different photographic color image forming materials, such as color couplers capable of forming dyes of different colors upon reaction with an oxidized color photographic developer, diffusing dyes, bleachable dyes, or oxidized leuco dyes. The three emulsion layers are sensitized to three different portions of the electromagnetic spectrum with at least two layers sensitized to different regions of the infrared region of the electromagnetic spectrum.

    Abstract: The present invention refers to a silver halide photographic element containing a support having coated thereon at least a silver halide emulsion layer spectrally sensitized with a sensitizing dye according to the formula (I): ##STR1## wherein Z represents the atoms necessary to complete a 6-membered nitrogen-containing heterocyclic nucleus; at least 2 members of R.sub.1, R.sub.2, R.sub.3, R.sub.4 and R.sub.5 --but not R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 together--represent an organic group carrying a water-solubilizing group in free acid form, in salt form or in latent form, and are same or different, the members of R.sub.1, R.sub.2, R.sub.3, R.sub.4 and R.sub.5 that do not represent a said organic radical carrying a water-solubilizing group represent hydrogen, an alkyl group, an alkenyl group or an aryl group; and n is 0 or 1.The silver halide photographic material has the advantage to have a broad sensitivity in the red portion of the spectrum. It can be exposed to laser beam sources in the range of 600-700 nm.
