    Abstract: A portable authentication device and method of authenticating products or packaging by analyzing key ingredients on products or on product packaging is disclosed. Light-sensitive compounds can be used to identify the product or product packaging. The product or product package may include visible or invisible ink containing a particular light-sensitive compound. The ink may be printed in one or more locations on the product or product packaging to produce an authentication mark, such as a bar code. The device includes an assembly for providing a source of light to irradiate the ink containing the light-sensitive compound on the sample product or product package, an optical detector to detect certain spectral properties emitted or absorbed by the irradiated ink and a controller to determine the authenticity of the sample product or product package by comparing the emitted or absorbed properties to a standard.

    Abstract: A method is provided for detecting a tracer in a preparation by precipitating a coloring agent from a sample of the preparation, especially where the coloring agent otherwise interferes with detection of the tracer. A sample of the preparation may be contacted with an effective amount of a precipitating agent to precipitate the coloring agent in the sample, yielding a sample supernatant having a reduced concentration of coloring agent compared to the preparation. Detection of the tracer in the supernatant may produce a result which may be evaluated to assist in quality validation in a process of manufacturing the preparation or authenticating the preparation.

The invention includes a probe assembly for providing a source of light to irradiate a sample product, an optical detector to detect emitted light from the irradiated product and a controller to determine the authenticity or quality of the sample product by comparing the emitted light to a standard. A small sample of the product to be authenticated is tested on site (e.g., at the point of manufacture or at the point of distribution) thereby giving immediate feedback as to its authenticity or quality. The sample, together with the light-emissive compound may be placed on a chip.
