    Abstract: 1,1,1-Trichloroethane (viz., methylchloroform) and 1,1,2-trichloroethane are produced in the same reactor by feeding molecular chlorine and chloroethene (viz., vinyl chloride) as well as 1,1-dichloroethane to the reactor. The ratios at which the two trichloroethanes are produced can be easily controlled by controlling the relative ratios of 1,1-dichloroethane and chloroethene introduced to the reactor. The reactions are conducted in the liquid phase in the presence of free radical initiator.

    Abstract: Perchloroethylene containing contaminating amounts of dichlorobutadiene is treated with bromine, e.g., elemental bromine, in the presence of a free-radical initiator, thereby to produce perchloroethylene substantially-free of dichlorobutadiene and without significant loss of perchloroethylene. A bromine scavenger, e.g., trichloroethylene, can be added to the treated perchloroethylene to react with excess bromine that may be present in the perchloroethylene.

    Abstract: A process for liquifying a substance comprises: (a) transferring latent heat from the substance in the gaseous state to a first heat transfer fluid passing through a first loop wherein the first heat transfer fluid is substantially isolated from the substance and is unreactive with the substance; (b) transferring heat from the first heat transfer fluid to a second heat transfer fluid passing through a second loop wherein the second heat transfer fluid is substantially isolated from the substance and from the first heat transfer fluid; and (c) transferring heat from the second heat transfer fluid to a third heat transfer fluid wherein the third heat transfer fluid is substantially isolated from the substance, from the first heat transfer fluid, and from the second heat transfer fluid. The preferred substance is molecular chlorine.

    Abstract: A gaseous feed stream comprising hydrogen fluoride and 1,1-difluoroethane is contacted with liquid organic barrier material in a condensing zone to partially condense the feed stream. The gaseous phase remaining after the partial condensation comprises most of the 1,1-difluoroethane originally present in the feed stream while the liquid condensate comprises most of the hydrogen fluoride originally present in the feed stream. The gaseous phase and the liquid condensate are removed from the condensing zone as separate streams. Less than about 50 percent of the 1,1-difluoroethane originally present in the feed stream reacts with hydrogen fluoride to form 1,1,1-trifluoroethane during the partial condensation and the removal of the separate streams from the condensing zone. The preferred liquid organic barrier material is 1,1,-trifluoroethane.
