    Abstract: Methods and apparatus for eliminating instability in intelligent assist devices are disclosed. The intelligent assist device includes an overhead motorized moveable trolley, a support that extends downwardly from the trolley to a payload, and a sensor operatively coupled to the support to sense a characteristic of motion imparted by a human operator to the device. A controller is operatively coupled with the sensor and the trolley to control movements of the trolley. The controller estimates an amount of oscillation in the support that does not correspond to the motion imparted by the human operator and adjusts movements of the trolley based thereon.

    Abstract: A method and system for controlling an intelligent assist device, robot, or other powered system that is partially or fully directed by the intent of a human operator. The method and system includes measuring a force or motion imparted by the human operator to a control. The measurement is determined with respect to the motion of the machine at a point of the machine that allows the benefit of collocation of sensing and actuation, or of approximation of such collocation. The system includes a support attached to the machine at the beneficial point, and a plurality of sensors to measure the force, torque, or motion imparted by the human operator to the support with respect to the beneficial point. The method and system provide improved stability of control of the system, and improved responsiveness to the intent of the human operator.

    Abstract: A mechanical apparatus and method for a high performance hoist for raising and lowering a load, and control apparatus and method for controlling the hoist such that its operation is responsive and intuitive for a human operator. The mechanical apparatus provides a reel for winding a cable, a ball-screw for translating the reel, and an encoder on the reel with which the height of the payload may be monitored. Also disclosed is an operator's handle comprising a movable sleeve with a damper as well as a spring to return it to its null position. The control apparatus and method provides for a handle-nulling mode in which the payload height is servo-controlled to follow the displacement of the operator's hand grasping the handle. The control apparatus further provides a float-mode in which the payload height is responsive to the operator's forces applied directly to the payload.
