Patent number: 5754283Abstract: There is provided a high precision device for measuring the color of non-self-luminous or self-luminous objects having interchangeable optical geometries for conversion from one optical geometry to another. The device interchanges a plurality of modules, each having at least one optical geometry for directing illumination from an illumination source and for collecting sample light reflected from a measured object or sample. Such optical geometries include a 45/0 geometry, sphere geometry, specular included geometry, and specular excluded geometry. Each module is removably attached to the device when measurement of the color of the sample is desired and may be separated from the device when measurement of the color of the sample is not desired. Also, each module may include removable filters for absorbing certain types of light, such as ultraviolet visible light, and blocking elements to determine the source of any reference signal.Type: GrantFiled: August 8, 1995Date of Patent: May 19, 1998Assignee: BYK-Gardner USA, Division of AtlanaInventors: Thomas J. Patent number: 5672190Abstract: Process and furnace for the continuous production of a molten pool from particulate meltable batch materials such as glass-forming raw materials. The raw materials, in particulate form, are injected into and suspended in combustion gases within a combustor section to form a particle-laden gas flow. The gas flow is accelerated vertically downwardly into a refractory chamber to impact the surface of a molten pool, producing inertial separation of the molten particles into the pool and strong shear forces by the exiting combustion gases, resulting in pool circulation and improved fining and homogeneity.Type: GrantFiled: June 26, 1995Date of Patent: September 30, 1997Assignee: Gas Research InstituteInventors: Anthony F. Patent number: 5590264Abstract: A method and apparatus for the graphic association of a user dialog display with its primary application in a data processing system. A unique miniature graphic representation, or icon, is created for each primary application within a data processing system which has a plurality of primary applications simultaneously active therein. Thereafter, each time a user dialog for a selected primary application is displayed within a window, a copy of the unique miniature graphic representation of the selected primary application is displayed, in a normally unused portion of the user dialog window, thereby permitting a user to readily identify the association between the user dialog window and its underlying primary application. In a depicted embodiment of the present invention, the selection of a unique miniature graphic representation within a user dialog window, utilizing a graphic pointing device, will result in the creation of a textual display identifying the primary application by name.Type: GrantFiled: April 10, 1991Date of Patent: December 31, 1996Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Patrick J. Patent number: 5508661Abstract: A frequency synthesizer using a fixed oscillator driving a comb line generator to generate a spectrum of comb lines, one of which is selected by a switched array of fixed-tuned, YIG passband filters. The selected comb line is combined in a mixer with a signal from a local oscillator, which, preferably, is a direct digital synthesizer. The output of the mixer is fed to another switched array of fixed-tuned YIG passband filters where only the desired sideband is selected and the comb line and the other sideband is filtered out. In various alternative embodiments, tunable YIG filters are substituted for each array. Some embodiments also use a reverse slope equalizer to break up the coherent energy in the comb line spectrum at the output of the comb line generator to allow RF amplification to be applied without saturating the amplifier.Type: GrantFiled: November 29, 1994Date of Patent: April 16, 1996Assignee: Litton IndustriesInventors: William J. Patent number: 5418507Abstract: A nonreciprocally coupled ferrimagnetic band reject and bandpass filter having passbands from 2-18 GHz and 6-18 GHz respectively. The band reject filter comprises one or more ferrimagnetic spheres shielded from each other by placement in nonmagnetic, electrically conductive cavities in a block placed in the flux gap of a tuning magnet. Nonreciprocal coupling is achieved by using full RF coupling loops and establishing all factors that affect the transmission line delay for travel of signals from one point in the filter to another such as loop length and size, cavity size, sphere size and spacing, dielectric constant, RF coupling loop wire size and spacing etc. such that the effective electrical length from the center of one full RF coupling loop to the centerline of the neighboring RF coupling loop is 1/4 wavelength, i.e.Type: GrantFiled: October 8, 1992Date of Patent: May 23, 1995Assignee: Litton Systems, Inc.Inventors: William J. Patent number: 5221912Abstract: A YIG notch filter using full RF coupling loops and having a notch filter center frequency tunable as high as 18 GHz comprising a plurality of undoped YIG spheres of much smaller volume than used in the prior art and linearly arranged in a air gap. The spheres are suspended in cavities in a nonmagnetic block which are spaced much more closely than in the prior art. The 50 ohm stripline impedance inverters formed on a substrate and connecting the RF coupling loops of the spheres used in the prior art are eliminated. The quarter-wavelength impedance inverter function necessary to fabricate a notch filter is implemented by using the RF coupling loops themselves and measuring the distance from centerline to centerline of adjacent RF coupling loops. Twin insulated wires with up to one diameter separation for the RF coupling loops are preferred with the wires soldered together between the spheres.Type: GrantFiled: October 24, 1991Date of Patent: June 22, 1993Inventors: William J.
