  • Patent number: 5129335
Abstract: A process for controlling the temperature and flame front in a liquid waste incinerator comprising: dispersing fluid wastes into the flame of at least one oxygen/fuel burner to incinerate the waste in and around the flame, wherein flame energy is regulated by adjusting the fuel to the low heating value waste ratio to control the flame front and temperature in said incinerator. The flue gas resulting from burning the waste may be used to heat, possibly concentrate partially and/or evaporate (if liquid is present) the fluid waste prior to dispersing it into the flame.
    Type: Grant

Assignee: Union Carbide Industrial Gases Technology Corporation
    Inventor: Eddy J. Lauwers
  • Patent number: 5116399
Abstract: The invention relates to a process for melting glass forming ingredients in a glass melting furnace adapted therefore, said furnace having an upstream melting zone and a downstream fining zone, wherein the glass forming ingredients introduced to the upstream melting zone via inlet means and the resulting melt therefrom travel along a path from the melting zone to the fining zone, said melt being withdrawn from outlet means which communicate with the fining zone, the improvement comprising; providing at least one high momentum oxygen-fired flame in the vicinity of said outlet means to sweep unmelted glass forming ingredients floating on the surface of the melt in said vicinity to prevent said unmelted glass forming ingredients from entering the outlet means whereby the contamination of an outflowing molten glass from said outlet means is avoided or reduced.

  • Patent number: 5097774
Abstract: The invention relates to a process for obtaining a substantially homogenous temperature profile along the length of an incinerator during the incineration of halogenated waste containing materials comprising:(a) providing a mixture containing an aqueous solution and halogenated waste having a preselected heating value;(b) introducing said mixture into the incinerator in the presence of oxidant to engender a flame; and(c) spraying an aqueous solution into or around the flame.

  • Patent number: 4473388
Abstract: In a process for melting glass in a furnace adapted therefor, said furnace having an upstream melting zone and a downstream fining zone, wherein the molten glass travels along a path from the melting zone to the fining zone comprising:(a) introducing solid glass batch into the melting zone;(b) heating the batch whereby an upper layer of batch and a lower layer of molten glass are formed in the melting zone;(c) providing sufficient heat to maintain the molten glass in the molten state through the fining zone;(d) providing at least a part of the process heat through at least one oxygen/fuel flame located at each side of the path of the molten glass, said flames being fueled by an oxygen containing gas/fuel mixture wherein the oxygen containing gas contains about 50 percent to about 100 percent oxygen by volume; and(e) withdrawing the molten glass from the fining zone, the improvement comprising:(i) providing the oxygen/fuel flames at low momentum;(ii) directing the tip of each flame at the interface of the solid
