  • Patent number: 7413873
Abstract: The present invention is based, in part, on the discovery that colon carcinoma, carcinogenesis, or the predisposition thereto is associated with the level of Wnt2, Wnt5, BMP6, and Fz receptors and the full-length and dominant negative form of LEF1.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: April 25, 2002
Date of Patent: August 19, 2008
Assignee: The Regents of the University of California
Inventors: Marian L. Waterman, Randall F. Holcombe, J. Lawrence Marsh, Karine Hovanes, Tony Wai Hung Li
  • Publication number: 20040142859
Abstract: The invention relates to a novel method for treating a variety of diseases and disorders, including polyglutamine expansion diseases such as Huntington's disease, neurological degeneration, psychiatric disorders, and protein aggregation disorders and diseases, comprising administering to patients in need thereof of a therapeutically effective amount of one or more deacetylase inhibitors. The invention is also directed to a transgenic fly useful as a model of polyglutamine expansion diseases, which may be used to test potential therapeutic agents.

  • Patent number: 6520961
Abstract: An apparatus for aligning a mechanical pivot axis of an external fixator with an anatomical pivot axis of a hinged joint. The hinged joint has first and second bones on opposite sides of the anatomical pivot axis. The external fixator has a central body connecting a first bone screw clamping assembly and a second bone screw clamping assembly. The central body includes the mechanical pivot axis. The apparatus for aligning includes an alignment member and a connecting member. The alignment member has a longitudinal axis for alignment with the anatomical pivot axis. The connecting member has a first end adjustably secured to the alignment member and a second end adjustably secured to the first bone screw clamping assembly.

  • Publication number: 20020169300
Abstract: The present invention relates to the discovery that LEF1 is a new type of target gene in that it is ectopically activated in colon cancer. The pattern of this ectopic expression is unusual because it derives from selective activation of a promoter for a full-length LEF1 isoform that binds &bgr;-catenin, but not a second, intronic promoter that drives expression of a dominant negative isoform. &bgr;-catenin/TCF complexes can activate the promoter for full-length LEF1 suggesting that in cancer, high levels of these complexes misregulate transcription to favor a positive feedback loop for Wnt signaling by inducing selective expression of full length, &bgr;-catenin sensitive forms of LEF/TCFs. The invention provides diagnostic and therapeutic methodologies based on the discoveries described herein.

  • Patent number: 6152925
Abstract: An apparatus for adjustably securing the humerous, which is on a proximal side of elbow joint, relative to the ulna on the distal side of the elbow joint. The apparatus includes a central body having inner and outer ring members interconnected for relative rotation about a common mechanical axis adapted to align with the anatomical axis of the elbow joint. The central body defines a radiographic window for permitting lateral radiographic examination of the anatomical pivot axis of the elbow joint. The apparatus preferably includes a distraction mechanism for distracting the humerus perpendicular to the proximal end of the ulna.

  • Patent number: 5931837
Abstract: A fixator for adjustably securing a first skeletal element on a superior side of an ankle joint relative to a skeletal element on the inferior side of the ankle joint. The fixator includes a bone screw clamping assembly that preferably secures a pair of screws to the bones of the foot. The bone screw clamping assembly is attached to a central body of the fixator and is operative for articulating the pair of bone screws about an axis substantially co-axial with the anatomical pivot axis of the ankle joint. The bone screw clamping assembly further defines a radiographic window for permitting lateral radiographic examination of the anatomical pivot axis of the ankle joint.
