Patent number: 8997740Abstract: A humidifier for use with a pressure support system. The humidifier includes a body having an inlet, a fluid holding chamber, and an outlet. The inlet is positioned upstream and in fluid communication with the fluid holding chamber. The outlet is positioned downstream of and in fluid communication with the fluid holding chamber. A back-flow preventing valve is positioned upstream of the fluid chamber. The back-flow preventing valve is movable between an open position, in which the inlet is unblocked, and a closed position in which the inlet is blocked. In the closed position, the back-flow preventing valve prevents fluid, fluid vapor, or both from entering the pressure support via the inlet to the humidifier.Type: GrantFiled: March 5, 2007Date of Patent: April 7, 2015Assignee: RIC Investments, LLCInventors: J. Raymond Pujol, Patrick W. Truitt, Daniel Martin, Winslow K. Duff, Steven A. Kimmel, Jeffery Keppler, Peter Chi Fai Ho, Lance Busch, Jerome Matula, Jr., Drew A. Demangone, Anthony J. Bafile

Patent number: 8640696Abstract: A patient treatment system and method comprising a patient circuit, a pressurizing flow module disposed in the patient circuit, a humidifier disposed in the patient circuit, a monitor, sensors within the patient circuit, and a processor. The patient circuit delivers a flow of gas from a gas source to an airway of a patient. The pressurizing flow module elevates the pressure of the gas within the patient circuit. The humidifier elevates the humidity of the gas in the patient circuit to a circuit humidity level. The monitor monitors at least one parameter of the gas from the gas source. The sensors generate corresponding signals that can be processed to estimate a rate at which vapor is added to the gas in the patient circuit. The processor determines the humidity level of the gas in the patient circuit downstream from the humidifier based on the signals generated by the sensors and the at least one parameter of the gas in the gas source.Type: GrantFiled: July 5, 2006Date of Patent: February 4, 2014Assignee: RIC Investments LLCInventors: J. Raymond Pujol, William Perroz, Jr., Robert G. Rybicki

Patent number: 8439031Abstract: A patient treatment system that comprises a gas delivery system, a patient interface, and a control interface to provide a pressurized flow of breathable gas. The patient interface is in communication with the gas delivery system, and is constructed to interface with a patient to provide the breathable gas to the patient. The control interface is carried by the patient interface, and enables the patient to control at least one aspect of the patient treatment system.Type: GrantFiled: July 5, 2006Date of Patent: May 14, 2013Assignee: Ric Investments, LLCInventors: Justin Rothermel, J. Raymond Pujol, Robert G. Rybicki

Patent number: 8042537Abstract: A method of employing a pressure generating system that provides a pressure therapy to the pulmonary system of a patient and to enable the patient to interact with the pressure support system, for example, to monitor the effectiveness of the treatment provided by the pressure support system. The interactive system includes an output device that provides first information to the patient, an input device that allows the patient to provide second information that is based on the first information and a control unit that controls the operation of the output device to present the first information and collection of the second information via the input device. In a further embodiment, the operation of the pressure generating system is controlled based on the second information provided by the patient.Type: GrantFiled: January 6, 2006Date of Patent: October 25, 2011Assignee: RIC Investments, LLC.Inventors: Douglas M. Mechlenburg, Mark C. Estes, William H. Broadley, J. Raymond Pujol

Publication number: 20080216833Abstract: A pressure support system that delivers a flow of gas to an airway of a patient. The system comprises a pressure generator, a torque monitor, a rotation monitor, and a processor. The pressure generator comprises an impeller and a motor. The impeller is coupled to the motor such that at least a portion of torque generated by the motor is provided to the impeller. As the impeller rotates through the body of breathable gas, the gas applies a torque to the impeller, and the impeller applies a force to the gas generating the gas flow. The torque monitor determines information related to the torque generated by the motor. The rotation monitor determines information related to a rotational velocity of the impeller and/or the motor. The processor determines one or more parameters of the flow of gas based on the information determined by the torque and rotation monitors.Type: ApplicationFiled: February 29, 2008Publication date: September 11, 2008Inventors: J.
