  • Publication number: 20020185016
Abstract: Catering in a transport vehicle like an aircraft involves collecting mixed waste including solids (e.g. left-over food portions, food wastes, napkins, disposable cutlery) and liquids (e.g. beverage rests), without separation. These wastes are disposed of into an apparatus including a receiving container with a filter and separating element at the bottom, a waste shaft leading into the container, a press arrangement with flap doors, pressure pistons which press the press arrangement and flap doors onto the waste in the container to compact the waste, and a drain and coupling system at the bottom of the container. As the waste is compacted, liquids drain down through the filter, oils and fats are removed by the separating element, and non-oily liquids are removed through the coupling system to the vacuum disposal system or the gray water drain line of the vehicle. A control unit controls the overall operation.

  • Publication number: 20020112281
Abstract: A toilet system, especially for passenger transport vehicles, includes a toilet bowl connected via a suction valve and a waste collection pipe to a waste collection tank. Waste-contacting surfaces of the toilet system that come into contact with urine and fecal waste are coated with an adhesion-inhibiting or adhesion-reducing nanocoating. Thereby, the adhesion of waste to the toilet bowl and other components is significantly reduced, and the total flushing water demand can be substantially reduced or, preferably completely eliminated. An airflow flowing into the toilet bowl, induced by the vacuum suction through the suction valve, is sufficient to “flush” the waste material from the nanocoated waste-contacting surfaces. The toilet system provides a substantial reduction in the total system weight and in the required quantity of flushing water that must be carried in the vehicle, and thus makes the toilet system particularly applicable for passenger transport vehicles such as aircraft.

  • Patent number: 6283019
Abstract: In a method for engraving printing cylinders for rotogravure in an electronic engraving machine, at least two engraving lanes with predetermined lane widths lying side-by-side in an axial direction of the printing cylinder are engraved with a respectively allocated engraving element. Before the engraving, an axial reference position is predetermined for each engraving element, the axial spacings thereof relative to one another corresponding to the predetermined lane widths of the engraving lanes. The engraving elements are roughly positioned to their reference positions. Subsequently, the axial spacing errors between the reference positions and the actual position of the engraving element the rough positions are measured. During engraving, the engraving elements are moved along the printing cylinder with the faulty spacings relative to one another caused by their rough positioning.

  • Patent number: 5812971
Abstract: A method and apparatus for performing joint stereo coding of multi-channel audio signals using intensity stereo coding techniques. In particular, predictive filtering techniques are applied to the spectral coefficient data, thereby preserving the time structure of the output signal of each channel, while maintaining the benefit of the high bit rate savings offered by intensity stereo coding. In one illustrative embodiment of the invention, the input signal is decomposed into spectral coefficients by a high-resolution filterbank/transform; the time-dependent masking threshold of the signal is estimated using a perceptual model; a filter performing linear prediction in frequency is applied at the filterbank outputs for each channel; intensity stereo coding techniques are applied for coding both residual signals into one carrier signal; the spectral values of the carrier signal are quantized and coded according to the precision corresponding to the masking threshold estimate; and all relevant information (i.e.

  • Patent number: 5781888
Abstract: A method and apparatus for the perceptual coding of audio signals in which perceptual noise shaping is achieved in the time domain by performing a (linear) prediction (i.e., filtering) in the frequency domain. As a result, the temporal spread of quantization noise is reduced. Specifically, according to one illustrative embodiment of the present invention, a method comprises decomposition of the audio signal into a plurality of spectral component signals; generating a prediction signal representative of a prediction of one of said spectral component signals, said prediction based on one or more other ones of said spectral component signals; comparing the prediction signal with said one of said spectral component signals to generate a prediction error signal; coding said one of said spectral component signals based on the prediction error signal to generate a coded spectral component signal; and generating the encoded signal based on the coded spectral component signal.

  • Patent number: 4908081
Abstract: The invention concerns a sliding body for sliding systems in which sliding surfaces of sliding and counter components form a gap in which there is a fluid, whereby the sliding body (1) at least in the area of sliding surfaces (10) is comprised of several stacked thin form elements stamped out of foils or cards, which are solidly bonded together on the contact faces. The invention also concerns a process for the production of the sliding body, whereby foils are produced from ceramic slips, in which various hollow chambers and/or recesses are stamped or impressed, a laminating agent is applied to the foils or cards, the foils or cards are stacked into a sliding body packet and the layers of the stack are laminated together, the organic components are partially baked off, after which a post-treatment of the sliding body takes place, then the remainder of the organic components are removed, and then the laminated sliding body is sintered between 1200.degree. and 2200.degree. • Patent number: 4834590
Abstract: A pneumatic conveying apparatus for conveying loose material comprises a device for feeding material to be conveyed, into a container, and a conveyor nozzle for producing a jet of pressure gas for entraining material into a conveyor conduit. An annular nozzle array or annular gap is provided around the conveyor nozzle, to produce a flat flow of gas, which is concentric to the jet of gas produced by the conveyor nozzle. The jet of gas and the flat flow combine in a gap between the conveyor nozzle and the adjacent mouth of the conveyor conduit, and pass into the conveyor conduit, with the material to be conveyed being controllably entrained thereby. The installation is controlled to operate in the range of maximum loading of material in the conveying gas flow.

  • Patent number: 4526635
Abstract: Process and apparatus for manufacturing heat exchangers from ceramic sheets, wherein different flow channels are stamped from or pressed into the sheets, and the formed sheets are joined together with a laminating agent. The stacking of the individual sheets is effected using apparatus in which the sheets are transported to the forming means, applicator means and laminating means by horizontally and vertically displaceable, rotatable and pivotable suction plates. The organic component of the ceramic sheets is expelled from the heat exchanger block obtained in two heating steps with an intermediate forming operation to bring the heat exchanger block to its final dimensions, and the block then fired between 1,200.degree. to 1,700.degree. C. The actual sintering temperature depends on the particular ceramic used, which may comprise Si.sub.3 N.sub.4, SiC, cordierite and/or semiconductive barium titanate compounds.
