  • Patent number: 7428815
Abstract: In a method of operating a compressor near the compressor pumping limit wherein the compressor includes a control arrangement for adjusting the momentary operating state of the compressor, the flow velocity of a mass flow through the compressor in the boundary layer along the wall of the flow passage is determined for detecting operation of the compressor close to the pumping limit from a reversal of the direction of the mass flow vector in the boundary layer and the control arrangement is actuated so as to prevent the compressor from transgressing the pumping limit.

  • Patent number: 6651614
Abstract: In a method of operating a diesel internal combustion engine, wherein a homogeneous mixture is formed in the combustion space before a spontaneous ignition by means of fuel injected directly into separately supplied combustion air, which combustion air is admitted to the combustion space in a swirling flow about the longitudinal axis of the cylinder that can be adjusted as regards its swirl intensity by a control element. A control unit adjusts the swirl intensity in a manner coordinated with the injection parameters to provide a homogeneous mixture igniting at a predetermined point for highly effective engine operation with low emissions.

  • Patent number: 6634174
Abstract: An exhaust gas turbocharger for an internal combustion engine includes an exhaust gas turbine in the exhaust gas system and a compressor in the intake system for producing compressed charge air. A compressor rotor is arranged in a compressor inlet channel. In order to achieve a greater range of utilization, an adjustable shutoff element is arranged in the compressor inlet channel, upstream from the compressor rotor, for variable adjustment of the effective cross-section.

  • Patent number: 6553762
Abstract: In an exhaust gas turbocharger for an internal combustion engine including an exhaust gas turbine and a compressor connected to the turbine so as to be operated thereby, the turbine includes a housing consisting of an inner and an outer shell formed from steel sheets and being arranged in spaced relationship so as to form therebetween an intermediate space.

  • Patent number: 6457311
Abstract: An exhaust-gas turbocharger for an internal combustion engine has an exhaust-gas turbine in the exhaust tract and a compressor in the intake tract, the exhaust-gas turbine and the compressor being connected via a shaft which is supported in a casing of the exhaust-gas turbocharger via at least one bearing. In order to improve the efficiency of the turbocharger, the bearing has a non-contact design, in that, when the exhaust-gas turbocharger is in operation, the shaft is held at a distance from, and so as to be virtually free of friction with, a bearing receptacle fixed to the casing.

  • Patent number: 6378307
Abstract: An internal combustion engine has an exhaust gas turbocharger with an exhaust gas turbine and a compressor. In addition, an air-driven turbine is provided which is torsionally connected to the compressor and to which combustion air can be supplied via an adjustable shut-off element. For operation of the exhaust gas turbocharger over a wide operating spectrum, an additional duct is provided between compressor inlet and the air inlet of the air turbine, the air supply in the additional duct being adjustable by the shut-off element. In the lower load range, in the case where the required boost pressure falls below a threshold value, the additional duct is opened by means of the shut-off element and the air supply to the compressor inlet is reduced.
