  • Patent number: 11907401
Abstract: A systematic method of introducing obfuscating “organic” noise to a user's content engagement history leverages a recommender system by creating a public history on a client device which is a superset of the user's true engagement history. The method builds up the superset history over time through a client's interaction with the recommender system by simulating organic growth in a user's actual engagement history. The organic superset prevents an adversary with access to the underlying recommendation model from readily distinguishing between signal and noise in a user's query and obfuscates the user's engagement history with the recommender system.

  • Publication number: 20220405621
Abstract: Recommender systems often rely on models which are trained to maximize accuracy in predicting user preferences. When the systems are deployed, these models determine the availability of content and information to different users. The gap between these objectives gives rise to a potential for unintended consequences, contributing to phenomena such as filter bubbles and polarization. An analysis of information availability through the lens of user recourse includes a computationally efficient audit for top-N matrix factorization recommender models and may be used for adapting recommender modules to meet targets for model performance parameters within defined contexts.

  • Patent number: 8644271
Abstract: A wireless mesh communication protocol that dynamically assigns communication time-slots and frequencies to mesh nodes. A first node is established as a PC that sequentially polls other nodes. A second node responds at a predetermined time with information that includes database records, and then a third node responds similarly. The second node is then established as the PC and the first node is polled during dynamically allocated time-slots and on a frequency that depend on the second node's database records. The third node is then established as a PC and acts similarly. In both cases the first node responds by sending information and data records. The first node is then re-established as the PC. The first node then polls the second and third nodes at times and frequencies that depend on the first node's database records.
