  • Publication number: 20040209877
Abstract: Phenolic compounds with a phenolic molecule to which are covalently linked an oxygen-containing group, a nitrogen or another oxygen containing group, and a C1-C4 alkoxy group, obtainable from monocotyledonous plants, or by chemical synthesis, have been found to preserve and/or augment innate immune defenses in humans and animals. Additional chemical compounds of the present invention may include benzoxazinoids-cyclic hydroxyamic acids, lactams, and corresponding glucosides, which may serve as precursors to phenolic compounds. The phenolic compounds and precursors of phenolic compounds of the present invention, at concentrations suitable for human and animal therapeutic use, may be obtained from monocotyledonous plants such as corn in their early growth states which are timely harvested for optimum yield.

  • Patent number: 6667308
Abstract: Phenolic compounds with a phenolic molecule to which are covalently linked an oxygen-containing group, a nitrogen- or another oxygen containing group, and a C1-C4 alkoxy group, obtainable from monocotyledonous plants, animals that eat such plants, or chemical synthesis, have been found to act as an antidepressant or otherwise a treatment for bettering mood, a therapy for improving sexual desire or performance, an adjunctive therapy for achieving weight loss, and an adjunctive therapy for substance abuse and addiction. These compounds, at concentrations suitable for human therapeutic use, may be obtained from plants such as corn in their early growth stages and from parts of animals such as the velvet antler tips of deer and elk.

  • Patent number: 6487490
Abstract: The present invention provides a fan speed indication system enabling the operator to control engine rotational speed to match specific thrust performance to flight requirements. The invention accommodates variations in engine thrust performance measured at manufacture or overhaul. In one embodiment, the invention provides an analog speed signal to flight control apparatus. The invention may also be configured to provide a digital speed signal to engine power management control apparatus.

  • Patent number: 5610461
Abstract: An AC induction motor assembly includes first and second endshields at least one of which is of special construction for reducing material costs. The motor assembly includes a stator assembly and a rotor assembly having an associated rotor shaft, which are mounted between and supported by the endshields. The endshields are of a skeletal construction and include a plurality of truss members which are so configured as to permit the endshields to be made of different materials while retaining the same configuration. The truss members include two rails parallel with one another and oriented generally parallel to the axis of rotation of the rotor shaft, and a web extending between the rails, integral with them.

  • Patent number: 5589348
Abstract: The invention relates to an improved enzymatic method for determining the concentration of an analyte in a sample body fluid. The improvement comprises a coupled enzyme reaction scheme comprising the in situ generation of reduced nicotinamide coenzyme, with either simultaneous or subsequent re-oxidation of coenzyme by an analyte substrate and substrate specific enzymes. The change in absorbance due to the reoxidation of coenzyme is proportional to the concentration of analyte in the reaction mixture.

  • Patent number: 5051091
Abstract: A simplified operation for setting a dental implant into bone following tooth extraction uses the cavity left by the extraction rather than drilling. To hold the implant in the proper position in the tooth cavity, it is braced with resorbant material. The implant can be surrounded by resorbant material in various ways: it may be emplaced between two blocks of resorbant material, the blocks sewn together, and the combination inserted into the cavity; or resorbant material may be cut into a strip and the implant rolled up in the strip prior to insertion. Additional resorbant material can be inserted to adjust the position of the implant. With the implant properly aligned, the gums flaps are sutured over the resorbant material and implant. In time, bone will grow around the implant and firmly fix it into the bony structure. A dowel or abutment head may then be mounted to the implant for attaching a prosthetic tooth, bridge, or the like.
