  • Patent number: 5268299
Abstract: Diluent and wash compositions are useful in a rapid and sensitive assay for detecting antibodies, and especially retroviral antibodies, in a biological specimen. The diluent composition is buffered to a pH of 6 to 10 and includes a protein or carbohydrate, a surfactant and a negatively-charged organic compound. The wash composition is buffered to a pH of 5 to 10 and includes a surfactant. These compositions can be included in a diagnostic kit. The method of this invention includes mixing the biological specimen with the diluent composition, forming an immunological complex between ligand and antibodies in the specimen and separating complexed materials from uncomplexed materials using a filtration membrane and a washing step. An enzyme labeled anti-antibody is added to form a ligand-antibody-antibody complex followed by its detection using suitable reagents.

  • Patent number: 5265792
Abstract: A light emitting diode has both end faces metallized and is mounted on a substrate with the light emitting junction perpendicular to the substrate. The electrically conductive ends are electrically bonded to conductive areas on the substrate by solder or conductive adhesive LED dice can be placed on the substrate by temporarily attaching the dice to a tape which has been wrapped around a knife edge. The dice tilt as the tape wraps around the edge and are picked off one at a time by a vacuum collet while temporarily supported by a movable finger, and then transferred by the vacuum collet to a substrate. A similar method may be used for placing semiconductor dice on a substrate without the tilting of dice around the edge. In another embodiment, an array of LEDs can be assembled in windows through a metallized plastic tape which is bonded to a foundation with additional metallized leads.

  • Patent number: 5263846
Abstract: The present invention discloses a main rotor collective pitch control assly for rotary wing aircraft. The assembly uses segmented rotor blades. The collective pitch of each movable segment may be independently varied, or may be adjusted in unison with one or more other segments on the same or different rotor blades. Control inputs may be made manually by the pilot or may be made by a computer which interprets data pertaining to the vibrational level and velocity of each rotor span. The pilot may override the computer in the event of system failure or if otherwise desired.

  • Patent number: 5262730
Abstract: Measurements of the permittivity of samples over a very wide frequency range and a wide temperature range have previously involved such problems as changing parts of the measuring equipment in different regions of the frequency range, substituting one of the components of a bridge used as part of the equipment to obtain bridge balance, and limited permittivity resolution. The present invention employs a capacitance bridge formed by a sample held between electrodes, a series capacitor and a detector comprising a high input impedance amplifier and correlators. The bridge is balanced by applying voltages of known relative amplitude and phase constructed from outputs having relative phases of 0.degree., 90.degree. and 180.degree. of two phase-locked oscillators. The voltages are constructed using phase shifters, attenuators and summer-driver circuits. At low frequencies the applied voltages are obtained from a waveform synthesizer.

  • Patent number: 5257836
Abstract: A stab joint coupling, for joining corrugated pipes, has a male connector and a female connector both having means for attachment to a first and second piece of pipe by engaging the corrugation of the pipe. A circumferential elastomeric sealing means is positioned between the joined coupling connectors to effect a substantial liquid seal for the joint. The coupling permits two pieces of corrugated pipe to be joined relatively inexpensively and quickly by workers in the field.

  • Patent number: 5251131
Abstract: Classification of natural language data wherein the natural language data has an open-ended range of possible values or the data values do not have a relative order. A training database stores training records, wherein each training record includes predictor data fields. Each predictor data field containes a feature, wherein each feature is a natural language term, and a target data field containing a target value representing a classification of the record. Features may also include conjunctions of natural language terms and each feature may also be a member of a category subset of features. The training database stores, for each feature, a probability weight value representing the probability that a record will have the target value contained in the target data field if a feature contained in a corresponding predictor data field occurs in the record.

  • Patent number: 5244403
Abstract: The invention provides a socket for substrates such as single in-line memory modules, circuit boards, and similar components which are inserted into and rotated into fixed position on the socket. The socket housing includes end portions having improved structural integrity for externally mounting cooperative latch elements. The external mounting permits a greater variety of latch sizes and configurations to suit operational requirements. An exemplary latch is preferably metal and comprises a mounting collar having a compliant C-section which corresponds to a latch-receiving section or member on the socket housing, a detent for clasping a memory module, and a resilient section connected therebetween for biasing the detent so that it clasps the memory module in fixed position in the socket. The latch collar is mounted onto the cooperative section of the socket end portion, and the latch is thereby disposed exteriorly on the socket body.

  • Patent number: RE34388
Abstract: A gas turbine engine control system which receives an engine condition and generates a parameter signal representative of the condition. The control system also receives a temperature signal representative of the engine temperature downstream of the engine combustor. A comparator is used to compare the parameter signal with the temperature signal and a nonrecoverable stall output signal is produced when the temperature signal indicates the temperature is greater than a scheduled value for the given parameter signal. The invention also includes a method for monitoring a gas turbine engine comprising the steps of receiving an engine condition and for generating a parameter signal representative of the condition.
