  • Patent number: 6210700
Abstract: An improved immunomodulatory therapy for enhancement of depressed host defense mechanisms and improving allograft survival rates comprising the use of omega-9 unsaturated fatty acids to alter the immune response associated with organ transplantation. It is administered optionally in conjunction with an immunomodulatory diet comprising arginine and its salts, or metabolic precursors of arginine, together with an immuno-suppressive treatment comprising the administration of cyclosporine or other immuno-suppressants and optionally, with or without a donor specific transfusion. An especially preferred source of the omega-9 unsaturated fatty acids is canola oil.

  • Patent number: 6165785
Abstract: A method of treatment using immune system suppressor cells and immune system stimulator cells comprises providing stem cells; combining the stem cells with lymphoid-derived cells to produce a co-culture; adding lipopolysaccharide and a factor selected from the group consisting of granulocyte macrophage-colony stimulating factor, macrophage colony stimulating factor, granulocyte-colony stimulating factor and mixtures thereof to the co-culture; obtaining immune system suppressor cells and immune system stimulator cells from the co-culture; and introducing and the cells into a host.

  • Patent number: 5612060
Abstract: An improved immunomodulatory therapy for enhancement of depressed host defense mechanisms as shown by improved allograft survival rates is disclosed. The therapy comprises the synergistic combination of an immunomodulatory diet consisting of an amino acid such as arginine, ornithine and their salts, a nucleotide such as RNA and fish oil as a source of omega-3-fatty acids together with an immunosuppressive treatment comprising the administration of a donor specific transfusion and cyclosporine.

  • Patent number: 5055446
Abstract: Septic patients are treated with an enteral or parenteral diet that improves mortality rate of the septic patients. The diet which is designed to provide the total caloric intake for the septic patient includes an low concentration of calories provided by protein. Generally from about 4% to about 10% of the calories in the diet are provided by protein. More preferably no more than 5% of the calories are provided by protein. The remainder of the diet is formed from lipids, and carbohydrates. The lipids should be in the form of a combination of omega 6 and omega 3 fatty acids. The diet will also include a vitamin and mineral supplement.

  • Patent number: 5053387
Abstract: A composition and method of treating a traumatic injury by improving immunologic response and reducing a hypermetabolic response associated with those suffering from a traumatic injury such as a substantial burn, trauma, major surgery and the like and more particularly to those suffering from a substantial thermal burn injury to the skin or other areas through the administration of the composition of the invention to those suffering from the traumatic injury are disclosed. The composition comprises an intact protein, arginine, carbohydrate, lipid comprising the omega-3 fatty acids of fish oil, including eicosapentaenoic acid, and with linoleic acid limited to the amount necessary to prevent an essential fatty acid deficiency thereof and nutritionally necessary vitamins and minerals.

  • Patent number: 4981844
Abstract: The immune response of a patient can be improved pre-operatively by altering the diet of a patient. When 20 to about 80% of the calories in a diet are from linoleic acid which is an omega 6 fatty acid, the immune response system and resistance to infection of the patient is substantially improved. Likewise providing 100 to about 1,000 IU per day of vitamin E in the diet also improves the immune response of the patient pre-operatively. This in turn improves the survival rate of the patient.
