Abstract: Group communication service is becoming more and more popular in communications systems. The users of the group communication would benefit especially from summarized group information. A member of a group comprising at least two members can receive the summarized group information by subscribing to information on other group members; wherein information on the group is summarized at least on the basis of current information on at least one other group member whose information was subscribed to; and by showing the thus obtained summarized group member information to the member.

On the basis of such operational criterion, one or more interface rules are generated. An interface rule includes information that identifies an application that is capable of utilizing two or more communication interfaces, and also a function for determining a communication interface to be applied by that application in communications of the group of one or more users. A profile that includes interface rules generated on the basis of operational criteria to be applied for a user is created and stored in a user terminal of the user. Use of applications can be matched with operational requirements posed on or by the user, without substantial need to change the applications and/or the configuration of the terminal due to the matching.

Abstract: A group communication gateway is provided between a direct-mode network and a packet based group communication service in a cellular network. The communication gateway communicates with the packet based group communication service over a cellular air interface and with direct-mode terminals over a direct-mode air interface for interchanging group packet control signalling and group packet speech and/or data traffic, thereby enabling the direct-mode user terminals to participate in a packet based cellular group communication. The group communication gateway relays group attachments/detachments, handles group speech item reservations, and forwards group packet speech and data traffic between the direct mode network and the packet based group service in the cellular network.

Abstract: A method for establishing a user-network interface in a digital transmission network for a cell-based digital 140 or 155 Mbit/s ATM signal, and a network interface embodying the method. The interface includes an input buffer controlled by a predetermined policing function for receiving the cell-based signal and adapting the transmission speed of the signal to the actual transmission speed of the transmission network; a mapper for forming cell blocks of N consecutive cells from the cell-based signal and for adding N overhead bytes to each cell block; and a multiplexer for multiplexing the output signal of the mapper byte by byte into N separate output signals of about 1.5 Mbit/s, 2 Mbit/s, 6 Mbit/s or 8 Mbit/s.
