    Abstract: A bed scale system includes at least one sensor frame having structure for generating a weight signal of a curved object such as a supporting wheel on a hospital bed or the like. The sensor frame includes a pair of spaced sidewalls defining a receiving area for the curved object, a bottom surface connected between the spaced sidewalls, and a deflection tab cooperable with the bottom surface. The deflection tab is deflected relative to the spaced sidewalls upon an application of weight to the sidewalls. A strain gauge is secured to the deflection tab and outputs a weight signal corresponding to the weight of the curved object according to a deflection amount of the deflection tab. The economical system provides patient weight without requiring removal of the patient from bed.

In one aspect of this embodiment, the radiolucent features can include one or more of a carbon-based heating element, an optical temperature sensing device, and/or a thermally responsive state-changing device.

    Abstract: In a preferred embodiment, a lateral rotation therapy mattress system for a patient, including: a plurality of side-by-side longitudinal air cells, the air cells being divided into first and second side-by-side groups, wherein decreasing the pressure of pressurized air in the second group will cause the patient to rotate in the direction of the second group; and first and second pairs of solenoid valves connected to provide, respectively, the pressurized air to the first and second groups, wherein opening one of the solenoid valves in a the first and second pairs of solenoid valves will provide a desired low air pressure level and opening both of the solenoid valves in a the first and second pairs of solenoid valves will provide a desired high air pressure level, the low air pressure levels providing partial turn of the patient and the high pressure levels providing full turn of the patient.

In an additional aspect of the invention, there is provided an air bed which incorporates the air supply and control components within the bed structure itself. In a further aspect of the invention, there is provided a low-noise air flow control pinch valve. In yet another aspect of the invention, there is provided a single air bag which simulates multiple air bags through the use of welded internal baffles. In yet an additional aspect of the invention, there is provided a bed siderail which is patient-operable.
