It also includes a mouth-end segment; an aerosol-generation system disposed between the lighting and mouth ends, which includes (i) a heat-generation segment adjacent the smokable segment, including a heat source and an insulation layer and (ii) an aerosol-generating segment including a substrate, which may include tobacco pellets and aerosol-forming material disposed in a substrate cavity between the heat generation segment and the mouth end; a piece of outer wrapping material that provides an overwrap around at least a portion of the aerosol-generating segment, the heat-generation segment, and at least a portion of the smokable segment and includes a foil strip laminated thereon; those segments being connected together by the overwrap to provide a cigarette rod; that is connected to the mouth-end segment using tipping material.

Abstract: An improved circumscribing plug wrap and tipping material are provided. The plug wrap and tipping material are a cast sheet which includes 20 to 70 percent by weight water dispersible cellulose material, 20 to 70 percent by weight of a water soluble film forming material and 0 to 10 percent by weight of a humectant. A smoking article (e.g., cigarette) using such plug wrap or tipping material or both is also provided.

Abstract: Processes for producing flavorful and aromatic compounds from tobacco material are provided. The processes involve providing a tobacco suspension comprising finely ground tobacco material, and subjecting the tobacco suspension to heat treatment in an enclosed, pressure controlled, and generally inert environment at a temperature of at least 140° C.

Abstract: A low-density filler material for cigarettes from either a low-density tobacco composition or an extruded grain or starch composition. The low-density tobacco composition and a method of making the low-density tobacco composition by extruding a mixture of tobacco and flour or tobacco and starch under conditions whereby the solvent in the extruded mixture flashes into vapor upon release from the extrusion head. The low-density tobacco composition is formed without the aid of an added binder. The low-density flour or starch material and a method of making it by extruding flour or starch with a filler material such as calcium carbonate under conditions whereby the solvent in the extruded mixture flashes into vapor upon extrusion through the orifice die. The extruded composition can then be cut and used in place of cut tobacco filler.

Abstract: A smoking article which employs tobacco as a source of smoke and flavor, but which does not burn the tobacco; the smoking article including a tobacco tablet, a heat conductor in contact with the tablet and a source of heat which heats the conductor in contact with the tablet to a pre-selected temperature for generating smoke. The invention also relates to a formed tobacco tablet for use in the smoking article.

Abstract: Improved flavorful and aromatic tobacco materials and processes for producing flavorful and aromatic components from tobacco material are provided. The processes involve subjecting substantially dry liquid free tobacco material directly to heat treatment in an enclosed pressure controlled environment at a temperature for a period of time such that flavorful and/or aromatic substances are provided while excess weight loss in the tobacco material is avoided.

Abstract: An apparatus for expanding tobacco includes a chamber having a spool and shell arrangement and a device for compressing tobacco into the shell for impregnation. The spool includes first and second cylindrical end members and a connecting rod between the first and second end members. A seal is provided between the outer surface of the end members and the shell. Expansion agent is introduced into the chamber to impregnate the tobacco for expansion.
