  • Patent number: 10449492
Abstract: A sorbent composition that is useful for injection into a flue gas stream of a coal burning furnace to efficiently remove mercury from the flue gas stream. The sorbent composition may include a sorbent with an associated ancillary catalyst component that is a catalytic metal, a precursor to a catalytic metal, a catalytic metal compound or a precursor to a catalytic metal compound. Alternatively, a catalytic metal or metal compound, or their precursors, may be admixed with the coal feedstock prior to or during combustion in the furnace, or may be independently injected into a flue gas stream. A catalytic promoter may also be used to enhance the performance of the catalytic metal or metal compound.

  • Patent number: 10159928
Abstract: Sorbent compositions including sorbent particles of a small particle sized sorbent with increased pneumatic conveyance properties. The sorbent compositions have relatively small median particle size and have a controlled particle size distribution (PSD). Specifically, the sorbent compositions include a relatively small percentage of very fine particles, such as a small percentage of particles having a particle size of not greater than about 5 ?m. The sorbent compositions are particularly useful for the treatment of a flue gas stream to remove mercury from the flue gas stream.

  • Publication number: 20180029009
Abstract: An activated carbon sorbent composition comprising activated carbon and a passivation agent, wherein the activated carbon sorbent composition exhibits reduced self-heating or auto-ignition properties as compared to the activated carbon. The activated carbon sorbent composition may be utilized to sequester contaminants such as mercury from a flue gas stream. The passivation agent includes a sulfur species, and may be a sulfur oxide compound, a sulfide compound, or an organic sulfur compound. Methods for the manufacture of the activated carbon sorbent composition and for the sequestration of contaminants in a flue gas stream using the composition are also disclosed.

  • Publication number: 20180029006
Abstract: Methods for the manufacture of sorbent compositions, sorbent compositions and methods for using the sorbent compositions. The methods include the utilization of an acidic halogen solution as a source of a halogen species that is dispersed on a solid sorbent. The use of the acidic halogen solution results in a highly active halogen species that demonstrates improved efficacy for the removal of heavy metal(s) from a flue gas. The sorbent composition includes a substantially amorphous halogen species associated with a solid sorbent such as powdered activated carbon (PAC).

  • Publication number: 20150165416
Abstract: A multi-functional composition of matter that is useful for injection into a flue gas stream to rapidly and efficiently remove mercury from the flue gas streams, particularly at above average flue stream temperatures of about 340° F. or higher. The multi-functional composition of matter may include a fixed carbon content of at least about 20 wt. %, a mineral content of from about 20 wt. % to about 50 wt. %, a sum of micropore plus mesopore volume of at least about 0.20 cc/g, a micropore volume to mesopore volume ratio of at least about 0.7, and a tapped density of not greater than about 0.575 g/ml. These compositions may be further characterized by number of particles per gram of the composition of matter such that the composition may have at least about 0.8 billion particles per gram, or even as many as 1.5 billion particles per gram.

  • Publication number: 20140191157
Abstract: Compositions and method useful for removal of mercury from a flue gas stream with relatively high concentrations of acid gas precursors and/or acid gases. The method includes contacting the flue gas stream with a sorbent composition comprising a sorbent material and a multi-functional agent, where the multi-functional agent includes a compound having a metal of valency 3 or higher. The multi-functional agent may be an inorganic salt, wherein either the cation or anion of the salt comprises a metal selected from Group 3 to 14 metal, such as aluminum. A halogen such as in the form of a halide salt that helps facilitate the oxidation of elemental mercury into its oxidized form may be present in the sorbent composition.

  • Publication number: 20140186625
Abstract: Method and compositions useful for removal of mercury from a flue gas stream with relatively high concentrations of acid gas precursors and/or acid gases. The method includes contacting the flue gas stream with a multi-functional agent, where the multi-functional agent includes a salt having a cation of valency 3 or higher. A composition comprises a (1) sorbent material such as powdered activated carbon which will ultimately capture and sequester oxidized mercury, (2) a multi-functional agent that protects the sorbent core from unfavorable reaction conditions or inhibitors, oxidizes or helps catalyze the oxidation of elemental mercury, and/or amalgamates with elemental mercury to make it easier to capture, among other benefits, and optionally (3) a halogen such as in the form of a halide salt that helps facilitate the oxidation of elemental mercury into its oxidized form.
