Abstract: The invention is in the field of molecular medicine, more in particular in the field of identifying new compounds for the treatment or prevention of colorectal cancer. The invention provides a method for the screening and/or identification of compounds that are capable of preventing or ameliorating the adverse effects of reactive oxygen species on eukaryotic cells. More in particular, the invention provides a method for the identification of an active therapeutic compound for preventing or ameliorating the adverse effects of reactive oxygen species on eukaryotic cells comprising the steps of: providing an assay wherein the expression of the WNT pathway in Caco cells can be determined under the influence of a reactive oxygen species, providing a candidate therapeutic compound, determining the ability of said therapeutic compound to normalize the expression of said WNT pathway in the presence or absence of said oxidant.
