    Abstract: Apparatus and method for distinguishing horizontal and vertical surfaces of box-shaped objects, particularly parcels, which objects are stacked in an orderly stack in which the lateral surfaces are substantially parallel. The influence of variations in the reflection coefficient over the surfaces of the objects is substantially eliminated. The apparatus and the method make it possible to determine which parcel in the stack may be picked up by a mechanical grab engaging with a front and the top of the parcel.
