  • Publication number: 20190136952
Abstract: A vehicle includes a differential having an electronic locker and a controller. The controller is programmed to, when in differential-lock mode, engage the locker responsive to vehicle speed being less than a speed threshold and a steering angle being less than a threshold, disengage the locker responsive to vehicle speed exceeding the speed threshold, and prevent automatic re-engagement of the locker responsive to the steering angle exceeding the threshold.

  • Patent number: 10221903
Abstract: One vehicle wheel is disconnected from a differential while the vehicle is in a front wheel drive mode. A controller checks for a malfunction of the differential while the vehicle is in the front wheel drive mode and in response to a request to enter an all wheel drive mode. If speeds of the other vehicle wheel and the differential input indicate that the malfunction is present, the all wheel drive mode is disabled and the driver is informed. If fluid temperature indicates a risk of the malfunction, all wheel drive mode is temporarily disabled and the driver is informed. If the temperature condition continues to be present for a predetermined duration, the all wheel drive mode is disabled.

Abstract: A vehicle includes a transmission mechanical park system, an electronic park brake, and at least one controller. The at least one controller is programmed to in response to (i) a speed difference of a measured speed and an expected speed of a downstream component of the vehicle that transmits torque downstream of the transmission mechanical park system exceeding a calibratable threshold and (ii) an ignition state of OFF, apply the electronic park brake to restrain movement of the vehicle.

  • Patent number: 9382992
Abstract: A locking differential includes a dog clutch configured to selectively couple a carrier to an axle shaft in response to magnetic forces generated by electrical current in a coil. A method of operating the differential is adapted to avoid failed engagement attempts that could potentially damage the dog clutch. If a driver commands engagement of the locking feature while a differential speed, a controller waits to command engagement of the dog clutch until the differential speed decreases below a threshold. The controller measures or infers a temperature of the differential fluid and adjusts the threshold to higher values when the temperature is cold.

  • Publication number: 20150380999
Abstract: A permanent magnet machine and a rotor assembly for the permanent magnet machine. The permanent magnet machine includes a stator assembly including a stator core configured to generate a magnetic field and extending along a longitudinal axis with an inner surface defining a cavity and a rotor assembly including a rotor core and a rotor shaft. The rotor core is disposed inside the stator cavity and configured to rotate about the longitudinal axis. The rotor assembly further including a plurality of permanent magnets for generating a magnetic field which interacts with the stator magnetic field to produce torque. The permanent magnets are disposed within one or more cavities formed in a sleeve component. The sleeve component configured to include a plurality of cavities or voids therein and thus provide minimal weight to the permanent magnet machine. The permanent magnet machine providing increased centrifugal load capacity, increased power density and improved electrical performance.

  • Publication number: 20070233669
Abstract: A term-by-document (or part-by-collection) matrix can be used to index documents (or collections) for information retrieval applications. Reducing the rank of the indexing matrix can further reduce the complexity of information retrieval. A method for index matrix rank reduction can involve computing a singular value decomposition and then retaining singular values based on the singular values corresponding to singular values of multiple topics. The expected singular values corresponding to a topic can be determined using the roots of a specially formed characteristic polynomial. The coefficients of the special characteristic polynomial can be based on computing the determinants of a Gram matrix of term (or part) probabilities, a method of recursion, or a method of recursion further weighted by the probability of document (or collection) lengths.

  • Patent number: 6549838
Abstract: A control strategy and method for controlling friction element engagement and disengagement time for an automatic transmission when the transmission is operating at cold ambient temperatures. During drive-to-reverse or reverse-to-drive friction element engagements with power on, the strategy compensates for a tendency of an oncoming friction element to gain capacity before an off-going clutch loses capacity, thereby avoiding a potential friction element tie-up condition when the transmission is operated with intermediate or high levels of engine torque as the friction elements are sequentially engaged and disengaged during cold rock cycling.
