  • Publication number: 20040038695
Abstract: Described is a method and system for an access control in a communication network which includes a first wireless unit, a second wireless unit and at least one further unit. The first unit generates a frame for the second unit. The frame includes a first portion and a second portion. The first portion includes data indicating that the first unit is about to establish a direct communication channel with the second unit. The first portion is transmitted to the second unit and is received by the at least one further wireless unit. The direct communication channel is established between the first unit and the second unit for transmission the second portion. During the transmission of the second portion, the at least one further unit abstains from communications using the direct communication channel.

  • Publication number: 20040027251
Abstract: Described is a system and method for tracking an asset. The system may include an RF tag coupled to the asset; a wireless wide area network (“WWAN”) including a plurality of transceivers and having a first coverage area; and a plurality of wireless local area networks (“WLAN”). Each of the WLANs has a second coverage area within the first coverage area. In addition, the system includes a computer which communicates with the WWAN and the WLANs. The computer generates a signal to be transmitted to the asset using a first transceiver of the WWAN. The asset receives the signal and generates a response signal; the asset transmits the response signal to a particular WLAN within which second coverage area the asset is located via a plurality of second transceivers. The computer determines the location of the asset within the second coverage area as a function of the response signal.

  • Patent number: 6577609
Abstract: In a wireless local area network, a method and apparatus for providing a multicast address data packet from a single access point to one or more mobile units coupled to the access point is disclosed. A data frame packet is formed containing two or more data packets, each packet targeted for different mobile units having unique unicast addresses. The data frame is transmitted to the mobile units and each of the mobile units derives the proper data intended for it from the data packets, by examining the unicast addresses of each packet.

  • Publication number: 20030020629
Abstract: A portable data input or computer system includes an input/output device such as a keyboard and a display, another data input device such as an optical bar code scanner, and a data processor module. To scan bar code type indicia, the operator points the scanner at the bar code and triggers the scanner to read the indicia. All the system components are distributed on an operator's body and together form a personal area system (PAS). Components may include a scanner or imager, a wrist unit, a headpiece including an eyepiece display, speaker and a microphone. Components within a particular PAS communicate with each other over a personal area network (PAN). Individual PASs may be combined into a network of PASs called a PAS cluster. PASs in a particular PAS cluster can communicate with each other over another wireless communication channel. Individual PAS can gain access to a Local Area Network (LAN) and/or a Wide Area Network (WAN) via an access point.

  • Patent number: 6411608
Abstract: A wireless communications system that has variable power levels in communications frames may be provided. The wireless communication system may include a plurality of cells that include transmitters for providing communications services to a geographic area. Each cell may be assigned a channel selected from a limited number of available channels. Communications frames may be transmitted in the cells using a plurality of data rates. Each communications frame may include a portion that is to be transmitted at one of the data rates. The power level used for transmitting that portion of a communications frame may be selected (e.g., lowered) to limit at what distances that portion may be properly received. Locations of cells in the geographic area may be partly determined based on the power levels.

  • Patent number: 5953143
Abstract: A switching network that utilizes at least three degrees of freedom, time, wavelength and space. In one embodiment that involves point-to-point switching, each space channel between an input and an output is assigned a time slot and wavelength coordinate characteristic of the output and the input transmitter and output receiver are tuned to the appropriate time and wavelength coordinates and selective switching is used to complete the space channel between the input and output. In another embodiment for generalized switching, each input channel is assigned a set of space, time slot and wavelength coordinates and an input signal is broadcast to all of the outputs which selectively makes connection to those inputs with an appropriate set of coordinates.

  • Patent number: 5742593
Abstract: When establishing a link (i-j) between two nodes i, j in a mobile radio communications network, transmission parameters are assigned such that conflicts and interference with nodes that neighbor the nodes i and j are avoided. A time-slot and a frequency-code value are assigned to the link (i-j) from a defined set of time-slots T, and from a defined set of frequency-code values FC. Set T contains time slots (t) during which links in the network can be activated, and set FC contains frequency-code values (f, c) each of which specifies a frequency or a frequency-code pair for association with the links. A time slot t.sub.k is first chosen from set T which slot is not in use for links between node i and nodes neighboring node i, or for links between node j and nodes neighboring node j. A frequency-code value (f, c).sub.1 is next chosen from set FC which value is not in use by any node that neighbors node i or by any node that neighbors node j, during the chosen time slot t.sub.k.

  • Patent number: 5652751
Abstract: An architecture for a radio network having nodes that are subject to dynamically changing topology such as, e.g., a mobile radio network. The network is partitioned into a number of physical subnets wherein each physical subnet includes a certain number of network nodes in relatively close proximity to one another. Each node of each physical subnet is affiliated with a corresponding node of each of the other physical subnets, thus defining a certain number of virtual subnets. A desired communications path is routed from a source node of one physical subnet to a destination node of another physical subnet, by routing certain parts of the path within one or more physical subnets during a first transmission phase, and routing remaining parts of the path within one or more virtual subnets during a second transmission phase.

  • Patent number: 4867820
Abstract: Procedure for preparing a laminated plate structure having an optical fiber situated therein, in which the optical fiber is situated between two respective laminating agent layers, in turn situated between two glass plates, the optical fiber extending out from the structure at opposite ends thereof. Grooves are cut out of the laminating agent layers around both opposite ends of the fiber extending out form the structure, with tubes being inserted over these respective opposite ends of the fiber and into the grooves, so that the fibers can move freely within these respective tubes. Then, the tubes and adjoining plates are adhered to one another, with appropriate compression being applied to form the final laminated structure.
