  • Patent number: 6291408
Abstract: Dispersant detergent additives for lubricating oils prepared by neutralization, carboxylation, sulfurization-overalkalinization, carbonation, distillation, filtering and degassing from alkyl phenols containing 35-85% by weight of linear alkyl substituents. The process does not require, during the neutralizing phase, the presence of a third solvent, which, by forming an azeotropic mixture with water promote the elimination of water arising from the neutralizing reaction. The additives of the invention have improved stability to hydrolysis and improved dispersion properties, improved compatibility and improved foaming properties.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: July 21, 1999
Date of Patent: September 18, 2001
    Assignee: Chevron Chemical Company LLC
Inventors: Jean-Louis Le Coent, Jacques Cazin, Thierry Triconnet, William W. Willis, Jr.
  • Patent number: 6262001
Abstract: An unsulfurized, alkali metal-free, detergent-dispersant composition having from 40% to 60% alkylphenol, from 10% to 40% alkaline earth alkylphenate, and from 20% to 40% alkaline earth single aromatic-ring alkylsalicylate. This composition may have an alkaline earth double aromatic-ring alkylsalicylate as long as the mole ratio of single-ring alkylsalicylate to double aromatic-ring alkylsalicylate is at least 8:1. This composition may be produced by the three-step process involving neutralization of alkylphenols, carboxylation of the resulting alkylphenate, and filtration of the product of the carboxylation step.

  • Patent number: 6124247
Abstract: The invention relates to the use of an effective quantity of borated compounds having the following general formula I: ##STR1## in which X is S or O, and R is a hydrocarbyl group containing at least 3 carbon atoms, in particular between 3 and 50 carbon atoms and preferably between 3 and 17 carbon atoms, as an additive improving the compatibility of a lubricating oil composition, comprising dispersants containing basic nitrogen atoms, with fluorocarbon elastomers. In a preferred fashion, the compound of general formula I is borated glycerol monooleate and the concentration of the compound of general formula I is such that the % Boron/% basic N ratio of the lubricating composition varies from 0.25 to 5.

  • Patent number: 5962380
Abstract: The use of an effective amount of a compound as an additive improving the compatibility of a lubricating oil formulation having dispersants containing basic nitrogen atoms, with fluorocarbon elastomer seals. That compound has the formula: ##STR1## wherein R and R.sup.1 are independently alkoxycarbonyl, alkenyloxycarbonyl, aryloxycarbonyl, alkylcarbonyl, alkenylcarbonyl, arylcarbonyl, or arylalkyl, or together form a carbocycle, and R.sup.2 and R.sup.3 are independently sulfurized alkyl, alkoxycarbonylalkyl, arylalkyl, or borated hydroxyalkyl, with the proviso that R, R.sup.1, R.sup.2 and R.sup.3 together contain sufficient carbon atoms to render the compound oil soluble in an oil of lubricating viscosity.
