  • Patent number: 4641613
Abstract: The invention relates to the diesel engine industry. To heat the air contained in the cylinder up to the fuel ignition temperature, the piston is made to execute several successive compression/expansion cycles with the inlet valve and exhaust valve closed and with fuel injection cut off. During starting and under low load, the engine operates according to a cycle of more than four strokes, for example six, eight or ten strokes. An improvement in the conditions of starting and low-load running, especially for supercharged diesel engines of reduced compression ratio.
