  • Patent number: 6375456
Abstract: Combustion process especially applicable to cement works, in which process it is desired to use fuels which are difficult to ignite. To do so, a flame comprising a primary zone and a secondary zone is created. The hot primary zone is created using an oxy-fuel flame, which makes it possible to preheat the fuel which is difficult to ignite so as to raise it to the suitable temperature in the secondary zone where it burns, with air, in order to create the main flame. Applications: cement, metallurgy, glass, etc.

  • Patent number: 6318278
Abstract: In this process the material is passed through a precalcination device equipped with at least one fuel injector at the outlet of which a fuel injection zone is formed, then the at least partially calcined material is passed into the rotary kiln which at its downstream end, is equipped with a primary combustion unit. At least one oxygen rich fluid with an oxygen concentration by volume higher than that of the products of combustion from the rotary kiln is injected near to the injection zone so that the oxygen rich fluid can supply from 1% to 40%, and preferably form 1 to 10% of the stoichiometric amount of oxygen needed for the combustion of the fuel injected by the injector.

  • Patent number: 6241514
Abstract: A kiln adapted to recycle kiln dust includes a recycle dust pipe in fluid communication with an oxidant stream to increase the concentration of oxygen in the fluidized recycle dust before the recycle dust stream is directed into the kiln flame. Increasing the oxygen concentration in the recycle dust stream improves the efficiency of the recycling process. A supplemental fuel stream may be introduced into the recycle dust stream to provide an additional flame to preheat the recycle dust stream before the recycle dust stream is directed into the kiln flame.

  • Patent number: 6116896
Abstract: A system and method for increasing the amount of oxygen in a kiln chamber is disclosed. The radial surface of a rotatable kiln is provided with at least one oxidant injection port extending through the radial surface into the kiln chamber. A cam is connected to the radial surface adjacent the oxidant injection port. A valve assembly including a valve chamber in fluid communication with an oxidant supply is mounted adjacent the kiln substantially in fixed spatial relation with the rotatable kiln body. The valve assembly includes a follower member adapted to contact a surface to the cam to actuate the valve assembly. Rotation of the kiln body brings the cam into contact with the follower member, thereby actuating the oxidant injection assembly, and injecting oxidant through the injection port into the kiln chamber.

  • Patent number: 6077072
Abstract: Superior heat transfer in a kiln is achieved by the use of at least one injector which injects both an oxidant, preferably containing oxygen, and a secondary fuel into the kiln. The injectors are provided so that the energy resulting from the combustion of the different fuels in the kiln heats specified regions of the kiln, without causing hot spots on the refractory walls. A firing scheme is described for the oxygen and fuels which allows an increase in the amount of heat released toward the load, resulting in significant increases in kiln efficiency and production. Low quality fuels may be used, as well as using and/or recycling more insufflated dust, without an adverse effect on the main flame.
