  • Patent number: 6331269
Abstract: An inert vessel for treating an oxidizable liquid metal includes a vessel body and a lid mounted thereon with bearing surfaces at a junction therebetween, the body and lid each including a metal wall having an inner face coated with a refractory lining. The vessel further includes movable auxiliary equipment passing through the lid, and optionally the body, with the vessel body including inlet and outlet means for the liquid metal and external atmosphere. An inflatable seal is disposed between the lid and the vessel body housed in a peripheral receptacle, the peripheral receptacle including at least one wall which is an extension of the lid, and at least one other wall which is an extension of the vessel body, the seal when inflated directly contacting the wall which is the extension of the lid and the wall which is the extension of the vessel body, and being directly adjacent the vessel body adjacent the junction.

  • Patent number: 5409054
Abstract: In the process, which enables complete automation of casting and limiting the intervention of the operator, the level of metal in the supply runner is monitored, a common law of metal levels is set as a function of time for all ingot molds after individual laws have been applied to each of the molds in order to permit them to meet the common law, lowering of the table supporting the molds is actuated and the casting process is halted when the program length has been obtained. The apparatus comprises probes for detecting the height and levels of metal in the runner and in the ingot molds, and an automation system for adjusting the levels and controlling the various operations.

  • Patent number: 4781239
Abstract: The invention relates to a process and an apparatus for casting in a pit, without risk of explosion, of aluminum and its alloys, particularly with lithium. It comprises placing an elastic shield (3) around the cast product in order to stop the cooling water and any liquid metal outpouring, the water and metal being collected by flowing over the shield, into inclined channels (5 to 14), where the water forms a film and the metal is stopped in portionwise manner by strips (19) located at appropriate distances within the channels.
