  • Patent number: 4731706
Abstract: A method of manufacturing and adjusting the orientation of a motor vehicle headlamp, and a motor vehicle for performing the method. The present invention relates to manufacturing and adjusting the orientation of a motor vehicle headlamp and to a motor vehicle headlamp for performing the method. In a headlamp (7) of the type comprising a transparent front glass (15) fixed to the bodywork (28, 29) of the vehicle and an optical assembly (35, 36) having an optical axis (38) passing through the glass (15), graduated adjustment means (90) are provided for adjusting the orientation of the optical assembly (35, 36) relative to the glass (15) in order to enable the orientation of the optical axis (38) to be adjusted using said means (90) relative to an error as measured between the orientation of the glass (15) as mounted and a predetermined orientation thereof.

This makes it possible to use mechanical means for measuring such an error and to adjust the orientation of the optical axis as a result of such measurement providing the headlamp is of the above-described type.

  • Patent number: 4345303
Abstract: A vehicle headlamp is constructed with its reflector and front lens adapted to be fixedly mounted in the bodywork of the vehicle, but incorporates a beam deflecting system, in order that the direction of the beam may nonetheless be adjusted. In one form, the beam deflecting system comprises two Fresnel lenses, mounted face to face in a position to intercept the whole of the headlamp beam, one being equivalent to a diverging lens with cylindrical surfaces, and one being equivalent to a converging lens with cylindrical surfaces. In a neutral position, the effects of the two lenses cancel out, so that no deflection of the beam occurs. One of the lenses is movable in translation away from the neutral position, so that a deflection of the beam occurs, without any other change in the beam pattern. In modified embodiments, the stationary Fresnel lens is not used; instead, its effect is produced by using a reflector of modified shape.

  • Patent number: 4041303
Abstract: A pair of vehicle headlamps have front surfaces which are inclined to a central longitudinal plane and the optical axes of the headlamps. Each lens is provided with deflector elements affording a pair of rear surfaces of which one is inclined to the optical axis and one is parallel thereto.

  • Patent number: 3970836
Abstract: A motor vehicle headlamp with a front glass having first prismatic surfaces which raise the horizontal cut-out line of one half of the dipped beam on the side of the road on which the vehicle is travelling so that the cut-out line consists of two horizontal lines joined by an oblique line, the lower horizontal cut-out line being on the side along which traffic travels in the opposite direction. A second prismatic surface is provided on the headlamp glass alongside the first prismatic surfaces. This second prismatic surface constitutes a window which directs a beam of light above the upper cut-out line of the dipped beam to illuminate objects on the vehicle's side of travel above the level of upper cut-out line.
