  • Patent number: 4871972
Abstract: An apparatus for detecting faulty power line insulators of the suspension type on an energized power line by comparing two adjacently mounted insulators in series. The apparatus is generally made like a three-prong fork. Each prong has a metal tip forming a probe adapted to conductingly straddle two adjacently mounted insulators. The lateral prongs are each connected to the central prong through a high voltage resistor and an ammeter. Comparison of the amperages registered by both ammeters indicates the existence of a faulty insulator.
