  • Patent number: 7978428
Abstract: A disk drive includes a disk having a track that includes a data sector divided by a servo sector so that a first data sector portion is on a first side of the servo sector, and a second data sector portion is on a second side of the servo sector. The disk drive reads data by: positioning the head at a first offset position with respect to the track and reading data from the data sector. • Patent number: 7499237
Abstract: A method of controlling recording and a hard disk drive (HDD) using the same. The HDD has heads in which a write head and a read head are spaced apart from each other by a predetermined gap in a track direction, and the method includes: reading a table having a head gap time corresponding to the gap between the write head and the read head and a disk linear velocity; and beginning a write operation by delaying the write operation by the head gap time from a data sector pulse. Accordingly, since a gap between a servo sector and a data sector and between data sectors can be reduced by the length corresponding to a head gap time, the usage efficiency of a data area can be increased.

  • Patent number: 7430088
Abstract: A retracting method of compensating for a time for parking and unloading with an additional floating force obtained by additionally operating a spindle motor for a predetermined period after a retract operation is started, a hard disk drive (HDD) adopting the method, and a computer readable recording medium having a program for performing the method. The retracting method of the hard disk drive to retract a head to a retract area in response to detection of a retract condition includes driving the spindle motor at least for a predetermined period at the beginning of a retract operation to rotate a disk. The spindle motor is additionally driven for the predetermined period after the retract operation is started such that an additional floating force can be obtained, and thus, a time for parking and unloading is compensated for, and a stable retract operation is performed.

  • Patent number: 7218467
Abstract: A method and apparatus for optimizing write properties of a magnetic head capable of performing read/write functions on a medium including defining the magnetic head as a normal head, a low temperature weak write (WW) head, or a high temperature WW head, and optimizing the write properties using optimal over shoot control (OSC) and write current (WC) according to the defined kind of magnetic head. Accordingly, the magnetic head in a hard disk drive (HDD) can be defined as the normal head, the low temperature WW head, or the high temperature WW head. Since the method uses the optimal OSC and WC values, according to the defined kind of magnetic head, in consideration of writability of the magnetic head and environmental temperature, low temperature or high temperature WW problems are avoided.

  • Patent number: 7110197
Abstract: A method for determining a type of a head in a hard disc drive, the head being a normal head, a weak head, or an ATE (Adjacent Track Erasure) head, and a method for adjusting a write parameter using the head type determining method. The head type determining method includes writing data via the head under multiple tracks per inch (TPI) conditions, in which TPIs are equal to a reference TPI, and wider and narrower than the reference TPI by a respective first and second predetermined ratios, and reproducing the written data, to detect a bit error rate under each TPI condition, and comparing the bit error rate under each condition to the bit error rate of the reference TPI, to determine a type of a head.

  • Patent number: 7095576
Abstract: A method and apparatus for controlling a write current capable of improving an adjacent track erasure (ATE) property of a hard disk drive. The method for controlling the write current in a hard disk drive includes applying overshoot current and write current to a head to write data on a disk, waiting for a predetermined time to pass, with the predetermined time being determined according to a thermal pole tip protrusion (TPTP) property of the head, and reducing the overshoot current and the write current upon passing of the predetermined time. Accordingly, since the overshoot current and the write current are decreased at the time of the TPTP being saturated, it is possible to effectively improve an ATE property of the hard disk drive.
