  • Patent number: 8340519
Abstract: A passive optical network is disclosed that enables burst mode operation without some of the disadvantages for doing so in the prior art. An embodiment of the present invention comprises a receiver that receives optical signals from transmitters of a plurality of optical network units. For each transmission from an optical network unit, the receiver provides an output signal based on a comparison of the optical signal and a reference voltage that is specific to that optical network unit. A digital-to-analog converter generates the reference voltage in a data rate-independent manner based on information provided to it from the control plane.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: May 19, 2008
Date of Patent: December 25, 2012
Assignee: The Board of Trustees of the Leland Stanford Junior University
Inventors: Jaedon Kim, Jin-Woo Cho, Leonid G. Kazovsky
