    Abstract: Retroreflective articles having multilayer films are useful for commercial graphics and retroreflective products, such as roll-up signs for highway transportation safety. The articles comprise multilayer films having at least one layer of polyurethane and at least one layer of a copolymer of alkylene and at least one non-acidic, polar co-monomer. Articles having the new multilayer films provide the same or improved performance, are less expensive, and offer improved methods for manufacturing, when compared to prior articles.

    Abstract: A novel release liner is provided which has a release surface comprising a syndiotactic polymer. The release liners of the present invention offer superior release to a wide variety of materials without the application of release agents, have relatively high heat distortion temperatures, and are unaffected by radiation sources used to cure most polymeric compositions. The release liners of the present invention can be microreplicated with a pattern which can be transferred to coatings and other impressionable materials to impart unique physical or optical properties. Thus, a method of producing a patterned article is also provided, as is a method of producing a solid object from a curable composition.

Signing materials comprising these microprismatic retroreflective films provide improved performance for off-angle illumination and viewing in traffic control and other signing applications.

The base film polymer, syndiotactic polystyrene, has characteristically low moisture absorption, excellent thermal stability, and high transparency. When used in combination with a UV-blocking coating, the sPS film exhibits a degree of resistance to UV-induced discoloration and degradation that is substantially superior to unprotected sPS films or films based on sPS resins that are merely compounded with a UV absorber. The sPS cover films of the present invention are useful as overlay films in signing and other outdoor applications, are comparable to UV-absorber loaded acrylic films in UV blocking or resistance, and provide a cost competitive alternative to acrylic, polyester, and fluoropolymer overlay films.
