Patent number: 10120904Abstract: Systems and methods are disclosed for resource management in a distributed computing environment. In some embodiments, a resource manager for a large distributed cluster needs to be able to provide resource responses very quickly. But each query may also not be accurate in initial resource request and will often have to come back to the resource manager multiple times. An artifact may provide low latency query responses by using resource request caching that can handle re-requests of resources. According to some embodiments, a queuing mechanism may take into account resources currently expended and any resource requirement estimates available in order to make queuing decisions that meet policies set by an administrator. In some embodiments, scheduling decisions are distribute across a cluster of computing systems while still maintaining approximate compliance with resource management policies set by an administrator.Type: GrantFiled: December 31, 2014Date of Patent: November 6, 2018Assignee: Cloudera, Inc.Inventor: Jairam Ranganathan

Patent number: 10007463Abstract: A method for migrating a virtual machine disk (VM disk) from first physical storage to second physical storage while the virtual machine (VM) is running, the method comprising: (a) creating a first child VM disk to which writes are redirected from a first parent VM disk, the first parent VM disk being on the first physical storage; (b) copying the first parent VM disk to the second physical storage as a second parent VM disk; (c) re-parenting the first VM child disk to the second parent VM disk; and (d) consolidating the first child VM disk and the second parent VM disk.Type: GrantFiled: June 14, 2016Date of Patent: June 26, 2018Assignee: VMWARE, INC.Inventors: Osten Kit Colbert, Gregory Hutchins, Robert Bosch, Jairam Ranganathan, Joel Baxter

Patent number: 9037621Abstract: A method and software is described for recreating on a target datastore a set of hierarchical files that are present on a source datastore. A content identifier (ID) is maintained for each component of the set of hierarchical files. The content ID of a component is updated when its contents are modified. The child component is copied from the source datastore to the target datastore. The content ID corresponding to the parent component on the source datastore is compared with content IDs corresponding to files present on the target datastore. When a matching content ID is discovered, it infers a copy of the parent component. The matching file on the target datastore is associated with the copied child component so that the matching file becomes a new parent component to the copied child component, thereby recreating the set of hierarchical files on the target.Type: GrantFiled: July 2, 2013Date of Patent: May 19, 2015Assignee: VMware, Inc.Inventors: Gregory Hutchins, Steven Michael Kusalo, Haripriya Rajagopal, Jairam Ranganathan, Li Zheng
