  • Patent number: 10344297
Abstract: A protein conferring resistance to Fusarium Head Blight disease (FHB) is described, along with the DNA sequence of the corresponding gene and mRNA copy (cDNA). The cDNA of Fhb1 gene can be used to produce genetically-modified plants having increased resistance to FHB, particularly in wheat, barley and other plants affected by the disease. The protein has antifungal properties and inhibits fungal growth, thereby providing a means for reducing DON toxin in grains. Conserved functional domains are identified in the protein. Genetically-modified plants having increased resistance FHB are also described, along with methods for producing such genetically-modified plants.

  • Patent number: 8258363
Abstract: Methods and apparatus relate to separating and removing aromatic compounds from a hydrocarbon stream. Splitting of the hydrocarbon stream into constituents as desired relies on a membrane and distillation columns that supply feed into the membrane and receive retentate and permeate streams output from the membrane. Configurations employing the membrane and the distillation columns enable benzene recovery and facilitate efficient separation.

  • Patent number: 7813111
Abstract: An enclosure is arranged for housing electronics associated with a luminaire and includes a first member including a mounting interface arranged to couple the first member to the luminaire and a second member mechanically coupled to the first member. The mounting interface facilitates provisionally coupling the first member to the luminaire and securing the enclosure to the luminaire. A corresponding mounting apparatus for securing an enclosure to a luminaire includes a mounting member having an opening and configured to be secured to a surface of a luminaire and a neck portion extending from the enclosure and configured to pass through the opening. The neck portion includes a neck opening that is configured to allow wiring to be routed from the electronics to the luminaire. The neck portion and the mounting member may include respective complementary surfaces to provide a mounting interface for provisionally coupling the enclosure to the luminaire.

  • Patent number: 7734356
Abstract: Methods and corresponding systems for controlling a light fixture include a memory for storing data and software. A multi-tap capacitor has a plurality of tap capacitors integrated into a capacitor housing. A plurality of switches are each coupled to one of the plurality of tap capacitors for selectively coupling the tap capacitors together to produce a variable multi-tap capacitance. A processor is coupled to the memory and the switches to facilitate: detecting a trigger for changing a lumen level output by the light fixture; determining a new lumen level in response to the trigger; determining a capacitance value that corresponds to the new lumen level; and configuring the plurality of switches to produce the multi-tap capacitance that corresponds to the new lumen level. The processor can record data in the memory that represents times of lumen changes and switch settings, which data correlates to power consumption.

  • Patent number: 7608815
Abstract: A method of compensating a photo sensor (and a corresponding photo sensor with compensation) insures the accuracy of the photo sensor, e.g., over environmental variations or photo cell variations. The method comprises: providing a first signal indicative of a light level; providing a second signal indicative of an environmental parameter, e.g., temperature; and calculating, responsive to the first signal and the second signal, a compensated signal that is indicative of an absolute light level. The calculating can be performed by a processor and utilize calibration and compensation information or parameters, which can be obtained experimentally.

  • Patent number: 7198111
Abstract: An automotive vehicle includes a vehicle body and at least one reservoir containing a fire suppressant agent. A distribution system receives the fire suppression agent from the reservoir and conducts the agent to at least one location about the vehicle's body in response to the determination by a sensor system and controller that the vehicle has been subjected to a significant impact. The sensor system and controller determine not only the magnitude of an impact upon the vehicle, but also track subsequent motion of the vehicle, as well as the time which has elapsed since an impact, so as to decide if and when the fire suppressant agent should be dispersed. Alternatively, the fire suppressant agent may be dispersed following activation of a manual switch.

  • Patent number: 6608551
Abstract: A radio replacement using RFID technology in an RF-enabled device is provided. The RF-enabled handheld, portable, or otherwise mobile device is equipped with an RFID tag having read and write capability. Data exchange occurs between the RFID tag and a network of RFID interrogators placed to provide adequate coverage of the area over which the device might move. As a result of replacing a full functioning transmitting/receiving radio with an RFID tag, the cost of the RF-enabled device could be significantly reduced, its battery life could be extended, and it could operate in a frequency band that does not require FCC approval. Additionally, this invention could provide tracking and access control using the RFID tag and interrogators.
