Abstract: The invention relates to methods of preparing a bilayer lipid membrane on a support matrix as well as a matrix preloaded with a protein and methods to achieve same. Steps used include hydration, pore infiltration, application of bilayer lipid membrane forming solutions and application of protein containing solutions. The methods and matrix produced are able to form and maintain a stable membrane. A further advantage is that the matrix may be pre-loaded with protein and then stored for use at a later date effectively stabilising the protein for later use.
