Patent number: 10248442Abstract: Virtual machines in a network may be isolated by encrypting transmissions between the virtual machines with keys possessed only by an intended recipient. Within a network, the virtual machines may be logically organized into a number of community-of-interest (COI) groups. Each COI may use an encryption key to secure communications within the COI, such that only other virtual machines in the COI may decrypt the message. Virtual machines may be automatically provisioned with configuration information, such as the encryption keys, when the virtual machine is started. The provisioning information may be created based on a template stored on a configuration server.Type: GrantFiled: July 12, 2012Date of Patent: April 2, 2019Assignee: Unisys CorporationInventors: David S Dodgson, Ralph Farina, James A Fontana, Robert A Johnson, David Maw, Anthony Narisi

Patent number: 9819658Abstract: Virtual machines in a network may be isolated by encrypting transmissions between the virtual machines with keys possessed only by an intended recipient. Within a network, the virtual machines may be logically organized into a number of community-of-interest (COI) groups. Each COI may use an encryption key to secure communications within the COI, such that only other virtual machines in the COI may decrypt the message. Virtual machines may further be isolated through a virtual gateway assigned to handle all communications between a virtual machine and a device outside of the virtual machine's COI. The virtual gateway may be a separate virtual machine for handling decrypting and encrypting messages for transmission between virtual machines and other devices.Type: GrantFiled: July 12, 2012Date of Patent: November 14, 2017Assignee: Unisys CorporationInventors: David S. Within a network, the virtual machines may be logically organized into a number of community-of-interest (COI) groups. Each COI may use an encryption key to secure communications within the COI, such that only other virtual machines in the COI may decrypt the message. Security may be further enhanced by establishing a session key for use during communications between a first and a second virtual machine. The session key may be encrypted with the COI key.Type: ApplicationFiled: July 12, 2012Publication date: January 16, 2014Inventors: David S. Dodgson, Ralph Foring, James A. Fontana, Robert A. Publication number: 20120078899Abstract: Methods and systems for detecting objects of interest in multimedia content are disclosed. One method includes receiving multimedia content at one or more computing systems, and generating a plurality of scenes from the multimedia content, each of the plurality of scenes including one or more candidate objects of interest. The method also includes receiving selection of one or more of the candidate objects of interest as objects of interest, and defining one or more actions to be taken with respect to one or more of the objects of interest. The method further includes generating metadata associated with each of the objects of interest, the metadata defining actions to be taken with respect to the one or more of the objects of interest.Type: ApplicationFiled: September 27, 2010Publication date: March 29, 2012Inventors: James A. Fontana, Johney Tsai, Matthew Miller, Linh H. Ly

Publication number: 20120078712Abstract: Methods and systems for providing multimedia content are disclosed. One method includes applying a container to multimedia content using one or more computing systems, the container defining an interface through which metadata external to the multimedia content is linked with one or more portions of the multimedia content. The method also includes constructing a set of text metadata describing an audio portion of the multimedia content, and generating a set of object metadata describing at least a portion of one or more objects appearing in the multimedia content. The method further includes, upon receiving a request for playback of the multimedia content, providing the text metadata and the object metadata associated with the container for synchronized use during playback of the multimedia content via the container.Type: ApplicationFiled: September 27, 2010Publication date: March 29, 2012Inventors: James A. Fontana, Johney Tsai, Matthew Miller

Patent number: 5960065Abstract: In a two-line telephone controller which includes a line select switch which operates complementarily to a force busy relay that allows an unselected telephone line to be forced to a busy state, a method for using the force busy relay also to place an active line on hold. The method includes detecting an incoming call on an inactive line, switching the line select switch to the inactive line, receiving an instruction to place the active line on hold, and responding to the hold instruction by closing an off-hook relay so as to connect the force busy switch across the active telephone line, opening a first handset select switch for the active telephone line, and closing a second handset select switch so as to select the incoming call on the ringing line. Because the force busy switch is connected across the formerly-active telephone line, loop current is maintained, thereby placing and maintaining the formerly-active call on hold.Type: GrantFiled: March 14, 1996Date of Patent: September 28, 1999Assignee: Canon Kabushiki KaishaInventors: Gregory F. Beck, Douglas L. Palmer, James A. Fontana, Richard D. Ray

Patent number: 5802314Abstract: A multimedia message handling apparatus comprises a keyboard for inputting text information, a microphone for inputting voice information, a scanner for inputting image information, and binary means for inputting binary information. A processor is provided for mixing at least two of text information, voice information, image information, binary information and OLE information to generate a multimedia message in which the different types of information are separately identifiable. A memory stores the generated multimedia message.Type: GrantFiled: June 5, 1995Date of Patent: September 1, 1998Assignee: Canon Kabushiki KaishaInventors: Thomas S. Tullis, Loren A. Wood, James A. Fontana

Patent number: 5572677Abstract: A network sound channel which permits voice communication over a local area network (LAN). Plural workstations are connected via respective connection nodes to the LAN. Each workstation includes a sound processor for converting sound into digital information and digital information into sound, and each workstation is operable in (a) a talk mode in which the sound processor converts sound into digital information and the digital information is stored in the storage over the LAN, and (b) a listen mode in which digital information is retrieved from the storage over the LAN and the sound processor converts the digital information into sound.Type: GrantFiled: August 4, 1994Date of Patent: November 5, 1996Assignee: Canon Information Systems, Inc.Inventors: Willis J. Luther, James A. Fontana

Patent number: 5515423Abstract: A computer-controlled communication board which includes a data access arrangement which functions as an intermediary between multiple telephone lines, a data communication device such as a fax/modem/voice chipset, and a standard telephone handset. The data access arrangement has a line select switch which switchably connects one of the multiple telephone lines to the data communication device via a single transformer and associated 2/4 converter. Off-hook switches are provided for each telephone line so that the data communication device can cause the selected telephone line to go off-hook. Likewise, ring detectors are provided for each telephone line so that the data communication device can detect which of those lines is ringing. Telephone handset switches may be provided for each telephone line so that the telephone handset may be switchably connected to any one of the multiple telephone lines.Type: GrantFiled: December 3, 1993Date of Patent: May 7, 1996Assignee: Canon Kabushiki KaishaInventors: Gregory F. Beck, Douglas L. Palmer, James A. Fontana, Alistair Egan, Richard D. Ray, Lisa Walker

Patent number: 5113500Abstract: A personal computer (PC) desktop workstation using a first operating system is enhanced with a single PC bus extension card (SCAMP Board) within its base housing which connects a second computer system (A-Series) having a large memory, control logic and a 2-inch.times.2-inch IC chip module holding a CPU and control store. The first operating system is organized to act as the I/O and peripheral subsystem for the second computer system so that peripheral connectivity, operational and maintenance interfaces can function with a PC keyboard, screen and peripheral devices. The workstation base housing has a footprint of less than three square feet and six inches height while providing memory and processing ability comparable to mainframe computers which are normally several volumes larger in size.Type: GrantFiled: August 23, 1989Date of Patent: May 12, 1992Assignee: Unisys CorporationInventors: Jefferson F. Talbott, Richard A. Cowgill, Chris R. Cummings, James A. Fontana, Anthony R. Pitchford
