  • Publication number: 20090134260
Abstract: A magnetic recording tape includes an elongated substrate, a magnetic coating disposed on a first side of the substrate, and a backside coated on a second side of the substrate. The magnetic coating includes an exposed magnetic recording layer and a support layer deposited on the substrate between the substrate and the exposed magnetic recording layer. The backside is coated on the substrate opposite the first side and has a roughness average Ra of less than about 18 nm and a friction force of less than about 70 g-force.

  • Publication number: 20060263644
Abstract: A magnetic recording medium including a substrate, a magnetic side, and a backside. The substrate defines a first surface and a second surface opposite the first surface. The magnetic side if formed over the first surface of the substrate and defines a recording surface. The backside is coated on the second surface of the substrate and is configured to decrease embossment of the recording surface. The backside defines a backside surface opposite the substrate. The backside surface having a skew less than about 0.5 and a kurtosis less than about 4.0.

  • Publication number: 20060110627
Abstract: A magnetic recording tape for data storage comprising a non-magnetic substrate having a front side and a backside, a magnetic layer formed over the front side of the substrate containing magnetic pigment particles, and a binder system therefor; the magnetic particles typically have a coercivity of at least about 2000 Oe. The substrate also has a backside coating layer formed over the backside surface of the substrate comprising at least one non-magnetic pigment and at least one binder therefor; the pigment is present in a range of from about 49% to about 55%, and the backside coating exhibits compressibility.

  • Patent number: 5712345
Abstract: A polymeric binder system useful for a magnetic recording medium, the polymeric binder system and comprising a hard resin component comprising a nonhalogenated vinyl copolymer and a soft resin component comprising a polyurethane having a phosphonate diester group. The binder system is useful for preparing the magnetic layer and/or backside coating of magnetic recording media, in order to provide media that demonstrate an improved combination of such as modulus, Tg, and smoothness.
