  • Patent number: 9850222
Abstract: Disclosed herein are the conversion of estolide compounds having unsaturated fatty acid groups into estolides containing cyclic carbonate moieties and methods of making and using the same. The estolides containing a cyclic carbonate may be used to produce urethane containing estolides.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: August 1, 2016
Date of Patent: December 26, 2017
Assignee: The United States of America, as represented by the Secretary of Agriculture
Inventors: Kenneth M. Doll, Terry Isbell, Steven C. Cermak, James A. Kenar

  • Patent number: 8679365
Abstract: Phase change materials that include oleochemical carbonates absorb and release latent heat upon changing phases from solid to liquid (melting) or from liquid to solid (solidifying). The oleochemical carbonates are prepared from oleochemical alcohols derived from animal fats and vegetable oils or other bio-based substances. These oleochemical carbonates have melting temperatures with a relatively high heat of fusion and are non-corrosive. Oleochemical carbonates can be mixed together in various proportions to adjust melting/solidification temperature ranges as required by a particular application.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: December 17, 2012
Date of Patent: March 25, 2014

  • Patent number: 7875262
Abstract: A delivery system for UV-protective sunscreen agents, antioxidants, skin care agents, cosmetics and the like comprising feruloylated acylglycerols (FAG) and other cinnamate-modified vegetable oils (CMVO) incorporates the agents into starch-based composites. These composites permit the use of a lower level of CMVO for comparable UV protection than if the CMVO were used alone.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: October 23, 2006
Date of Patent: January 25, 2011
Assignee: The United States of America, as represented by the Secretary of Agriculture
