  • Publication number: 20030159298
Abstract: A wheelless alignment device for a multiple-wheeled vehicle, wherein each of the wheels bears a portion of the vehicle's weight, has a rigid support member affixable to a wheel hub after its wheel has been removed. The rigid support member bears the portion of the weight of the vehicle normally borne by the removed wheel without substantial deformation, and has at least three reference surfaces that mate with corresponding reference surfaces of a sensor head frame. The reference surfaces are in spaced nonlinear relationship to each other. At least one affixation member attaches the head frame to the rigid support member at locations spaced from the registered reference surfaces, so that after registration the spatial relationship between the wheel hub and the sensor head is unchanged by variances in tightening. This arrangement produces greater accuracy in wheel alignment measurement and adjustment.

  • Patent number: 5842281
Abstract: The wheelless alignment apparatus includes a rigid fixture having a strut assembly coupling portion and a pair of spaced apart support leg portions. An adapter plate coupled to the strut assembly coupling portion engages the vehicle strut assembly to secure the adapter plate and the rigid fixture to the vehicle. A pair of support flanges extending from the leg portions and having a group of horizontal offset openings cooperates with a pivot bar having two spaced apart pairs of fixture height members, each member having a group of vertical offset openings. The pivot bar rests on a turntable, and coupling pins extending through corresponding horizontal and vertical offset openings enable the rigid fixture to pivot for alignment purposes.

  • Patent number: 5471754
Abstract: The wheel alignment kit and method related to a wheelless alignment technique employing a pair of alignment fixtures which cooperate with a corresponding pair of turntables to support the vehicle in place of its wheels and to facilitate easy access to the strut assemblies of the vehicle for alignment purposes. The kit also includes an electronic camber gauge tool adopted to be mounted on the fixtures to provide a user with an instantaneous camber reading. A pair of toe gauge tools adapted to be mounted on the fixtures cooperate with a datum line to provide the user with an instantaneous toe reading.

  • Patent number: 4782596
Abstract: A wheel aligning device and a method of using it, includes a rigid member having a centrally disposed large rearwardly extending hub for attachment to a vehicle strut assembly and a base block pivotally mounted in an off-set manner to the plate for height adjustment purposes. In order to mount a camber adjustment gauge to the device, a small forwardly projecting hub disposed within the well of the larger hub, includes a front wall for supporting a camber gauge, so that a gauge zeroing operation can be eliminated. Color coding indicia on the base block provides ready identification as to the height adjustment setting. Wave washers are provided at the pivotal connection of the base block to facilitate the adjustment thereof.

  • Patent number: 4651431
Abstract: The wheel aligning method and apparatus relates to the replacing of the wheel to be aligned with the novel apparatus, which helps support the vehicle, and yet provides relatively easy access to the wheel strut assembly for alignment purposes. The apparatus includes a rigid member assembly adapted to be mounted on the strut assembly in place of the wheel, and a base assembly is pivotally connected to the rigid member assembly for resting on a supporting surface. The strut assembly is adjustable in height to enable the rigid member assembly and its base assembly to move adjustably relative to one another to adjust the overall height of the apparatus.
