Publication number: 20160087920Abstract: Transferring instant messaging sessions includes receiving a selection, from a user within a user interface, of at least one instant messaging session from among multiple instant messaging sessions to transfer from a first instant messaging controller on a first device to at 5 least a second instant messaging controller on a second device, where the user is signed on concurrently to the first instant messaging controller on the first device and the second instant messaging controller on the second device. At least a portion of the selected instant messaging session is transferred from the first instant messaging controller on the first device to the second instant messaging controller on the second device and the transferred portion of 10 the instant messaging session is made perceivable on the second instant messaging controller on the second device.Type: ApplicationFiled: November 30, 2015Publication date: March 24, 2016Applicant: Google Inc.Inventors: James A. Publication number: 20150365448Abstract: Individuals may utilize devices to engage in conversations about topics respectively associated with a location (e.g., restaurants where the individuals may meet for dinner). Often, the individual momentarily withdraws from the conversation in order to issue commands to the device to retrieve and present such information, and may miss parts of the conversation while interacting with the device. Additionally, the individual often explores such topics individually on a device and conveys such information to the other individuals through messages, which is inefficient and error-prone. Presented herein are techniques enabling devices to facilitate conversations by monitoring the conversation for references, by one individual to another (rather than as a command to the device), to a topic associated with a location. In the absence of a command from an individual, the device may automatically present a map alongside a conversation interface showing the location(s) of the topic(s) referenced in the conversation.Type: ApplicationFiled: June 17, 2014Publication date: December 17, 2015Inventors: Lisa Stifelman, Madhusudan Chinthakunta, Julian James Odell, Larry Paul Heck, Daniel Dole

Patent number: 8965964Abstract: Communicating between electronic devices involves sending messages between the electronic devices. An original message having an original source indicator and an intended destination indicator identified is sent. A reply to that original message is sent by the recipient of the original message. The reply message has a reply source indicator and a reply destination indicator. A communication based on the reply message is sent. The communication based on the reply message has a reply source indicator that is the same as the intended destination indicator identified by the sender of the original message. In one example, a message is sent from computer operating an instant messaging program and forwarded to a mobile telephone. The reply sent from the mobile telephone is provided to the sender of the original message without revealing the telephone number of the mobile telephone to which the original instant message was forwarded.Type: GrantFiled: December 29, 2004Date of Patent: February 24, 2015Assignee: Facebook, Inc.Inventors: James A. Publication number: 20140330918Abstract: Routing and displaying instant messages includes receiving a first request to establish a first instant messaging session associated with an instant messaging online identity assigned to a user using a first instant messaging controller. The first instant messaging session is established in response to the first request, where the first instant messaging session includes a first state. A second request from the user is received to establish a second instant messaging session associated with the instant messaging online identity assigned to the user using a second instant messaging controller that differs from the first instant messaging controller. The second instant messaging session is established in response to the second request, where the second instant messaging session includes a second state. An instant message designated for the instant messaging online identity assigned to the user is received and a determination is made on where to route the instant message based on routing criteria.Type: ApplicationFiled: July 17, 2014Publication date: November 6, 2014Applicant: Bright Sun TechnologiesInventors: James A. Publication number: 20130254316Abstract: A computer program or method provides away messages from a first user to other users of a communications system, where the first user has grouped the other users into two or more groups. An interface is provided to the first user that displays representations of the other users in a manner that identifies how the first user has grouped the other users into the groups. The first user is able to select a selected group from the groups using the interface. The first user also is able to set a group away message for the selected group using the interface. The group away message is sent to a second user that has been grouped in the selected group when the second user attempts to communicate with the first user using the communications system and the first user is offline.Type: ApplicationFiled: May 22, 2013Publication date: September 26, 2013Applicant: AOL Inc.Inventors: Brian D. Patent number: 8532269Abstract: Architecture that employs a combination of in-band signaling (e.g., DTMF) with speech recognition to deliver usability improvements. The in-band signaling allows the user to indicate to the system when a barge-in operation is occurring and/or when to start listening to subsequent speech input and optionally, when to stop listening for further speech input. The in-band signaling can be utilized during a telephone call and using wireline and wireless telephones. Moreover, the architecture can be incorporated at the platform level requiring little, if any, application changes to support the new mode of operation.Type: GrantFiled: January 16, 2009Date of Patent: September 10, 2013Assignee: Microsoft CorporationInventors: Robert L.
