  • Patent number: 7316327
Abstract: Pressure vessel end dome reinforcements are placed upon resin-impregnated fiber-wound pressure vessels to improve the strength-to-weight ratio of high performance pressure vessels, such as those that are used as rocket motors, gas generators, and the like. The reinforcement structures are assembled from gore pieces to form gore bodies over dome regions of the pressure vessels.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: December 8, 2003
Date of Patent: January 8, 2008
    Assignee: Alliant Techsystems Inc.
Inventors: Roger D. Wright, Marcus A. Darais, James A. Yorgason, Alan J. Loveless, Darrel G. Turner, David R. Nelson

  • Patent number: 5348603
Abstract: A composite/metal hybrid rocket motor case made by rolling sheets of continuous, unidirectional fiber reinforcement pre-impregnated with an uncured, thermoset or thermoplastic resin about the mandrel using a tube rolling machine to form a liner having discontinuous layers of fiber reinforcement. The liner is inserted into a metal shell configured with elongated slots. A mold is placed around the shell with a bladder placed within the liner. The bladder within the mold is then pressurized to force the liner against the metal shell while the contents of the mold are heated. As the liner cures, it bonds to the shell. Fins, launch lugs, domes and bulkheads may be attached to the metal shell by known attachment methods.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: May 27, 1993
Date of Patent: September 20, 1994
    Assignee: Thiokol Corporation
