Patent number: 10069680Abstract: A virtual computer system service receives a request from a customer to provision a dedicated server for the exclusive use of the customer. The dedicated server may be used to launch one or more virtual machine instances. The virtual computer system service subsequently selects, from a pool of available servers, a server that can be dedicated to the customer and that does not have capacity allocated to any other customer. The virtual computer system service may update a database to specify, in an entry corresponding to the selected server, that the server has been dedicated for the exclusive use of the customer. Once the database has been updated, the virtual computer system service will enable the customer to launch a virtual machine instance using the dedicated server.Type: GrantFiled: March 16, 2015Date of Patent: September 4, 2018Assignee: AMAZON TECHNOLOGIES, INC.Inventors: Damian Gorman Wylie, James Alfred Gordon Greenfield, Michael Groenewald, Anand Rajender Kumar, Rajnesh Umeshraya Pai, Sivaprasad Venkata Padisetty, Georgios Elissaios, Scott Anthony Roberts

Patent number: 10019255Abstract: In a service provider environment, software deployments can be implemented by automatically routing an incrementally larger percentage of requests to a new software stack based on a success rate for previous requests. Thus, new and old versions of the software stack can be executed simultaneously with a small portion being routed to the new version until a sufficient number of requests have been handled. By slowly bringing a new software stack online, a confidence level in the new deployment can increase until it is fully deployed. Different success rates and different ramping rates can be used for each customer or based on different components of the request, such as API name, API parameters, location, etc. The software deployments can be extended to web-page requests.Type: GrantFiled: June 20, 2014Date of Patent: July 10, 2018Assignee: Amazon Technologies, Inc.Inventors: James Alfred Gordon Greenfield, Dirk Gerhardes Oberholster, Christopher Richard Jacques de Kadt, Jacob Adam Gabrielson

Publication number: 20180129628Abstract: Techniques are described for managing execution of programs. In some situations, program execution is managed for multiple users using excess program execution capacity of one or more computing systems. In some such situations, excess or otherwise unused program execution capacity may be made available to execute programs on a temporary basis, such that the programs executing using the excess program execution capacity may be terminated at any time if other preferred use for the excess program execution capacity arises. The excess program execution capacity may in some situations be provided in conjunction with other dedicated program execution capacity that is allocated to particular users, such as to use unused dedicated capacity of some users as excess capacity for other users. In some situations, the techniques are used in conjunction with a fee-based program execution service that executes multiple programs on behalf of multiple users of the service.Type: ApplicationFiled: January 2, 2018Publication date: May 10, 2018Inventors: Peter N. DeSantis, Matthew S. Garman, Charles Ward, James Alfred Gordon Greenfield, Andrew R. Jassy

Publication number: 20180039899Abstract: Remote computing resource service providers allow customers to execute virtual computer systems in a virtual environment on hardware provided by the computing resource service provider. The hardware may be distributed between various geographic locations connected by a network. The distributed environment may increase latency of various operations of the virtual computer systems executed by the customer. To reduce latency of various operations predictive modeling is used to predict the occurrence of various operations and initiate the operations before they may occur, thereby reducing the amount of latency perceived by the customer.Type: ApplicationFiled: March 20, 2017Publication date: February 8, 2018Inventors: Sebastian Martin Biemueller, Christopher Richard Jacques de Kadt, Mathew Daniel, Adi Meyers, James Alfred Gordon Greenfield, Thomas Friebel, Jean-Paul Bauer, Benjamin Van Der Merwe

Patent number: 9870268Abstract: A customer submits a set of preferences including hardware specifications for instantiating a virtual machine instance. The virtual machine instance may be instantiated in a physical host computer system that does not conform to the set of preferences. The virtual computer system service may be configured to evaluate the specifications of the available physical host computer systems to determine whether any of the available physical host computer systems conform to the set of preferences. Accordingly, the virtual computer system service may further evaluate the available physical host computer systems to determine whether available physical host computer systems comprise available slots for instantiating the existing virtual machine instance. If the one or more available physical host computer systems have available slots, the virtual computer system service may migrate the existing virtual machine instance to an available physical host computer system in order to fulfill the customer request.Type: GrantFiled: August 5, 2013Date of Patent: January 16, 2018Assignee: Amazon Technologies, Inc.Inventors: Andries Petrus Johannes Dippenaar, Frans Adriaan Lategan, James Alfred Gordon Greenfield
